Max Verstappen caused controversy during the Hungarian Grand Prix with his exchanges over team radio with engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.
The pair are known for their sarcastic radio messages to each other but that relationship appeared to be strained when Verstappen was put on a poor strategy which led to an expletive-ridden outburst to his Red Bull engineer.
Verstappen later collided with Lewis Hamilton while racing for the final podium spot, leading to him complaining over team radio that he moved under braking.
Lambaise responded that he was not going to engage in bringing any potential penalty to the stewards’ attention, adding that he felt Verstappen was being “childish” over team radio.
F1 fans reacted to the messages on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and the verdict was similar.
F1 fans react to Max Verstappen expletive-ridden radio messages
One user @Puntoboy felt Lambiase was right to call out Verstappen for his behviour: “Gianpiero Lambiase spitting absolutely facts on the radio today. First time I’ve seen anyone at Red Bull acknowledge how childish Verstappen is.
Meanwhile, @_HenryMill commented on Verstappen’s driving and felt the FIA should have clamped down more on it.
“Gianpiero Lambiase just confirmed it! Max is a kamikaze driving, FIA helped clown who can’t drive under pressure nor wheel to wheel. On top of that he’s a petulant spoiled child.”
The stewards did investigate the collision between the Dutchman and Hamilton, but later said there was no further investigation after finding neither driver predominantly at fault.
@F1blag believed the patient nature of the Red Bull pitwall ran out: “Gianpiero Lambiase has the patience of a saint. And today it ran out.”
Another user @Clantastic also felt that Lambiase “had enough” of Verstappen and @JoDay18 felt Lambaise was “a legend for putting up with Max’s petulance in such a calm and professional manner.”
Elsewhere, @mathskitt was happy with how Lambiase handled Verstappen: “Gianpiero Lambiase has absolutely made this race! I am here for his ability to deal with the petulant child!”

Max Verstappen unhappy with Red Bull strategy in Hungary
Verstappen made his thoughts known over team radio throughout the race about Red Bull’s strategy, while also repeatedly criticised the driveability of the car.
The Dutchman was also in a brief heated exchange with Lambiase during qualifying, when the engineer told him to “calm down” after a flustered message about tyre temperatures.
After the race, Verstappen was summoned to the medical delegate following his crash with Hamilton under Parc Ferme conditions. Lambaise informed Verstappen of this on the cool-down lap, which prompted a sarcastic response from the Dutchman.

It was the second time Verstappen has finished outside of the podium this season after the Monaco Grand Prix, when an early red flag effectively determined the finishing positions after it enabled all drivers to change tyres and fulfil the mandatory rules over using two different compounds in a race.
McLaren driver Lando Norris was embroiled in his own team orders controversy during the race, something Nico Rosberg likened to his years at Mercedes fighting with Lewis Hamilton.
