Fernando Alonso has begun to show his first signs of ‘exhaustion’ towards Aston Martin following another dismal qualifying result at the Monaco Grand Prix, according to a report from within the F1 paddock.
The two-time world champion will start from the back row of the grid for the very first time this season, which can be seen as quite a surprising statistic given the extent of Aston Martin’s issues with the AMR26.
Do you agree with Fernando Alonso’s verdict on hybrid engines in F1?
Of course, at 44 years old, it’s clear that Alonso doesn’t have all the time in the world left to secure a third world title that has eluded him for so long, but he has remained relatively cryptic about his future in F1 as he continues to grapple with making a decision.

Fernando Alonso admits Aston Martin’s ‘repetitive’ statements are ‘really annoying’
In a report by Autonocion following the conclusion of qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Spanish outlet described how Alonso showed his ‘first sign’ of ‘exhaustion and weariness’ as Aston Martin continue to be one of the poorest performing teams on the grid.
What’s more, the two-time world champion voiced his frustrations regarding the constant statements from his team regarding the lack of performance upgrades that they will be bringing to each race weekend.
Will Fernando Alonso score another Grand Prix win before he retires?
Today marks 13 years since Alonso's most recent win at the 2013 Spanish GP
“It’s quite repetitive, and it’s really annoying,” he told journalists inside the F1 paddock. “Every weekend, we say we won’t have any upgrades to the car until after the summer break, and we’re at the back of the grid.
“So yes, we try to go as fast as possible every weekend. We try to put in some good laps, and I think I did a good lap here in Monaco today with the car I had.
“There’s only one car like ours, and we try to put pressure on the others, but there’s no other competition than this.”
Despite Alonso arriving in Monaco with a glimmer of ‘hope’ regarding an uptick in results for the Silverstone-based team, it was quickly dashed following confirmation of his P21 grid slot for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

What did Fernando Alonso say about his qualifying struggles at the Monaco GP?
During his conversation with the press after the chequered flag fell on Saturday afternoon’s sessions in Monte Carlo, Alonso also highlighted how the AMR26 is still suffering from ‘fundamental’ issues, which hindered his one-lap pace.
“There’s not much difference compared to yesterday,” he conceded. “We changed the setup a lot, but the problem isn’t the setup. There are some more fundamental issues with the car than just changing the suspension height or a front or rear torsion bar.
“So yes, we tried to go faster. We had a bit of hope here in Monaco because it’s a different circuit, but yesterday, even in FP1, we saw that we were slow here too.”
Still, Alonso managed to flex his skillset as he continued his streak of outqualifying Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll at every race weekend since the 2024 British Grand Prix.
