The Spaniard may have dropped his biggest retirement hint yet in the lead-up to the Barcelona Grand Prix.

Having hosted his home Grand Prix for the entirety of his career in F1, Alonso admitted this year’s edition of the race in Catalunya could very well be his final one at the circuit.

However, that still leaves the door open for him to continue competing in 2027. Starting from next year, Barcelona and Spa will alternate on the F1 calendar, with the Belgian Grand Prix set to be held. The Montmelo-based circuit will then return in 2028.

Alonso certainly isn’t short of any motivation to continue racing in F1, leading many to believe that a curtain call at the end of the current season isn’t on the 44-year-old’s mind right now.

However, there are concerns regarding the competitive potential of Aston Martin’s rumoured ‘AMR26 B’ spec that the Silverstone-based outfit is hoping to debut at the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix.

As such, the report outlines how there is now a ‘real chance’ for Alpine to facilitate a return for Alonso, in order to give him one last dance at the same outfit that he scored both of his world titles in the sport.

The rumour is reportedly ‘gaining traction’ inside the Barcelona Grand Prix paddock, with Alpine appearing as a more attractive option for Alonso to claim one final podium before calling it a day.

The French constructor is currently being led by Alonso’s long-time manager, Flavio Briatore, who addressed the potential of signing a ‘top driver’ during his media duties at the Circuit de Barcelona.

Alonso secured a total of 17 wins during his first stint at Renault, which is widely regarded as his most successful period ever in F1 through the two world titles that he also claimed while at the Enstone-based team.

Naturally, Aston Martin have completely denied the rumours. According to Spanish outlet Marca, the Silverstone-based squad asserted that the Spaniard has shown his ‘complete commitment’ to their project going forward.

The report also noted how Alonso has been linked with a brand ambassador role for Aston Martin following his official exit from the grid.
