Max Verstappen failed to finish a Formula 1 race for the first time this season at the Austrian Grand Prix.

It had already been a very difficult weekend for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing.

Verstappen’s final lap in qualifying was ruined by a yellow flag brought out by Pierre Gasly’s spin, forcing the four-time world champion to start from the fourth row alongside Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto.

Yuki Tsunoda once again failed to get out of Q1 and finished the Austrian Grand Prix in last place.

Tsunoda has now sunk to 17th in the drivers’ championship, highlighting the issues Red Bull are currently facing.

Fans didn’t agree with Christian Horner when he talked about the issues with Red Bull’s car, as the team principal suggested the car wasn’t the issue in Austria.

Verstappen had made up a position heading into turn three on the opening lap before being taken out of the race by Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The 27-year-old now finds himself 61 points behind Oscar Piastri in the championship, and people are beginning to take him seriously when he suggests that the title isn’t something he can discuss.

Jos Verstappen reveals worrying Max Verstappen phone call at the Austrian Grand Prix

Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, was taking part in a rally event and couldn’t attend the Austrian Grand Prix.

However, when he was asked by Race Express if he had been following the weekend before the race, he said: “I have seen a little bit of qualifying.

“I saw the last lap when he got the yellow flags, but it didn’t look fast enough.

“I already heard it on the phone, he said, ‘Yeah, it’s just not good enough.’”

He was then asked why there was such a big difference between Canada and Austria, and continued: “Well, it’s a different circuit again.

“That has always been [the case], with the little grip on the track, and yes, other teams are making progress.

“Ferrari has brought a good update, we know that McLaren are always at the front and who else is in between?

“Mercedes is kind of in between, and I think the update that Red Bull brought doesn’t make that much of a difference.

“You can see it in Tsunoda, too; he doesn’t even reach Q2. So yeah, the speed has fallen from there.”

Christian Horner will be worried by Max Verstappen’s private Red Bull verdict

Verstappen has a contract at Red Bull until the end of 2028, but his future has been a source of constant discussion in the paddock this season.

Mercedes have shown an interest in Verstappen, although it’s unclear whether they will drop George Russell or Andrea Kimi Antonelli to accommodate the 27-year-old.

The Dutchman has been very loyal to Red Bull ever since they gave him his F1 debut with Toro Rosso more than 10 years ago.

However, if he is telling his father, who has been a key member of his camp alongside Raymond Vermeulen, that he’s this unhappy with the car, then Christian Horner will be concerned.

Verstappen may have forgotten about winning the championship this season, but all eyes are on how much faith he has in the team to quickly turn their fortunes around ahead of next year and the upcoming F1 regulation changes.
