Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have had a difficult 2025 campaign as he struggles to find consistency.
It took the two-time champion until his home race in Barcelona to score his first points of the season. Mechanical failures and a general lack of performance from the AMR25 have hampered Alonso’s campaign.

Since the Spanish GP, the 44-year-old has scored points seven more times and sits 12th in the standings. He has continued to outperform his teammate Lance Stroll, but has generally lacked performance in the Aston Martin.
Alonso was ‘very angry’ after the Mexican GP as he retired from the race with another mechanical DNF. He is desperate to see Aston Martin improve their fortunes ahead of the 2026 F1 regulations.

Aston Martin reserve driver Jak Crawford says Fernando Alonso is ‘not too happy’ amid recent struggles
Aston Martin junior Jak Crawford, who will be the team’s reserve driver in 2026, offers his insight on Alonso’s struggles on Drive to Wynn. He says ‘everyone’ in the team is frustrated with their season.
“Yeah, I think they’re not… everyone from the team’s not too happy at the moment. It hasn’t been a good span of races for the team,” said Crawford.
“I think a lot of the tracks haven’t really suited the car recently. So, especially Austin and in Mexico, I don’t think really suited the car too much.
“So, yeah, just an unfortunate period. I think it’s just it’s frustrating because everyone wants to be winning races. It’s frustrating for Fernando. It’s frustrating for Lance. It’s frustrating for everyone on the team that works really hard, of course.
“But yeah, I feel like, for looking at a bigger picture, everyone’s kind of already focusing on next year and next season, with the new regulations and just trying to finish out the year out strong because there’s still a lot to play for in the constructors’ championship.”

Is Fernando Alonso set to retire from Formula 1 in 2026?
The Spaniard will be hoping to return to the front of the grid under the new technical regulations. With Adrian Newey and Honda on board, Aston Martin have what they need to be successful in 2026.
It could well be his last season in F1, as his contract expires with the Silverstone squad in 2026. He is entering the final years of his career and he is looking to go out on a high note.
Interestingly, Alonso has not told Andy Cowell about his retirement plans. He will make a decision on his future during the 2026 season; he wants to see if he can be competitive with the new car.
It could be all change for the Silverstone outfit after next season. Aston Martin are already planning a new driver line-up in 2027, with Stroll also being linked with a move away from the team.
