Fernando Alonso’s time in Formula 1 could come to an end in 2026 as his options, besides Aston Martin, are dwindling.
Alonso has been hinting at retirement at the end of the season, depending on how this year goes with Aston Martin. Thus far, it has been a nightmare, as his past issues with Honda at McLaren have returned to haunt him.
The Silverstone outfit are languishing at the back of the field as Honda’s power units are lacking performance. Severe vibration issues has meant the team have not finished a race yet in 2026, with the problem being a serious safety concern.
What do you expect from Fernando Alonso in the 2026 F1 season?
Alonso had to take his hands off the steering wheel due to the vibrations, causing outrage amongst fans. Sitting 21st in the standings, it is not the way he thought 2026 would go, especially when it could be his last season in F1.
The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the year, and there are doubts as to whether he will continue beyond 2026. F1 commentator and pundit Harry Benjamin has pointed out how few options he has.

Harry Benjamin says ‘no one’ will sign Fernando Alonso after 2026
F1 doctors could ‘recommend’ that Alonso retire due to the severe neck pain he is suffering in the AMR26 with the vibrations. But if he does plan to continue into 2027, he may not have many offers on the table.
F1 commentator Benjamin spoke on Essential F1 about Aston Martin’s problems and how Alonso has landed with yet another uncompetitive car. He says that ‘no one’ will try to sign him if he decides to leave the team.
“It’s a really dire situation, isn’t it? And it’s tough to see Fernando Alonso in that situation again,” said Benjamin.
“There was talk this might be his final year in Formula 1. I don’t know if suddenly he’ll want to stick around a bit longer to just try and end on some sort of high.
“Patience of a saint. He’s going to have to because I don’t think he’s got any other options to go anywhere else.
“No one’s signing a Fernando Alonso, what is he, 44? No one’s signing a 44, going on 45-year-old, Fernando Alonso, with all due respect, not on a long-term deal.”

Who could replace Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin?
Aston Martin are already preparing for a future without Alonso. They have been linked with several drivers in recent months as Lawrence Stroll attempts to attract another top driver.
Oscar Piastri has been linked with Aston Martin amid the drama at McLaren last year. If ‘papaya rules’ remain an issue in 2026, rumours suggest that the Aussie will seek a way out, with Stroll’s team being supposedly in the frame.

Charles Leclerc has also been linked with the Silverstone outfit as he weighs up his options for 2027. He is growing frustrated over his lack of success at Ferrari.
Stroll made an ambitious offer for Max Verstappen in 2025 when his future at Red Bull was facing uncertainty. But given Aston Martin’s current situation, it is hard to imagine that they could attract the Dutchman, or any aforementioned driver, to the project.
