Fernando Alonso hints that 2026 regulations could drive him out of Formula 1 for good

Fernando Alonso has finally addressed his future in Formula 1, and unlike what many suggested, Aston Martin’s upgrades have little to do with his consideration.

Alonso has been pushing for Aston Martin to improve the AMR-26 for months now, as he has wanted to get back to competitive ways this season.

In response to this, Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey has been working tirelessly to try to get the car to a level where both Alonso and Lance Stroll can be competitive with the rest of the grid.

For Alonso, he is hoping to end his career on a competitive note, and the level that Aston Martin are performing this season is just not what he is willing to accept to retire.

But surprisingly, after the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso suggested that it is his stance on the 2026 regulations, rather than Aston Martin’s car, that will determine his future.

Fernando Alonso is no longer deciding his future based on Aston Martin’s upgrades this season

Speaking to reporters after the race, Fernando Alonso addressed his future in Formula 1 and Aston Martin as a whole.

While earlier reports had suggested Alonso would determine his future with Aston Martin based on their upgrades, he came out and said that his decision was more concerned with the F1 regulations and how they evolve.

“My decision has nothing to do with what happens in Hungary with the upgrades; we started this year on the wrong foot…

“It has more to do with the regulations, and with driving these cars, drives like Spa and Silverstone aren’t the dream.”

Alonso has been critical of the 2026 regulations on numerous occasions, and this becomes his latest critique of the new ruleset.

Aston Martin granted massive lifeline ahead of summer break

Coming into the race weekend, Aston Martin’s pace improved marginally at Spa, but still not enough to get the most out of their chassis in comparison to the rest of the field.

And even with Fernando Alonso suggesting that he was willing to be more patient with the team, the pressure is far from over for Adrian Newey.

Newey is set to introduce upgrades next weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as Aston Martin try to cut the deficit they have created coming into the new season.

These upgrades, regardless of Alonso’s future, will play a massive role in determining Aston Martin’s trajectory in the years to come.
