Formula 1 stewards reportedly have no ‘plausible explanation’ for delaying an investigation involving Max Verstappen at the Miami Grand Prix.
After a month-long break, the F1 2026 season resumed last weekend, with Kimi Antonelli winning the Miami Grand Prix ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
It was another bitterly disappointing weekend for George Russell, who only managed to finish fourth and is now 20 points behind Antonelli in the title race.
Meanwhile, Verstappen enjoyed a much-improved weekend, finishing in fifth place and ahead of the Ferrari pair of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
During the race, the Dutchman was noted for allegedly crossing the white line on the pit exit. However, the investigation into the incident was delayed until after the race, which baffled several people.
Eventually, Verstappen was handed a five-second penalty after the race, which had no impact on his finishing position as he had a healthy gap to the car behind.
A five-second penalty for Max Verstappen, but he keeps P5!
The right decision?
F1 stewards have no ‘plausible explanation’ for delaying Max Verstappen investigation
In his latest Q&A, BBC’s F1 correspondent Andrew Benson claimed that the delay in deciding on Verstappen’s pit exit breach came as a ‘surprise’.
Benson stated that the stewards said: “When the incident occurred, there was limited video evidence to make a clear decision on whether an infringement had occurred.”
However, it was quickly suggested that the stewards have access to ‘all the TV footage they want’ during a race.
Benson noted that there is ‘no plausible explanation’ as to why the decision was made after the conclusion of the Grand Prix.

Lando Norris claims Max Verstappen ‘ruined his own race’
After spinning during the opening lap, Verstappen pitted early and had to defend the likes of Norris and Piastri on much older tyres, something the reigning world champion was baffled by.
He said in the cool down room: “I don’t get what Max is doing. He just ruined his own race.”
Verstappen said: “After that(Lap 1 spin), the pace was not too bad on the medium, but as soon as I swapped to the hard compound, it was just a lot more difficult, and now, after the race, it is easy to say, of course, but I think that stint was just a bit too long.”
