Formula 1 fans have reacted to Ferrari’s “schoolboy error” during FP2 for the Singapore Grand Prix after they released Charles Leclerc into the path of McLaren’s Lando Norris during a scramble to leave the pit lane.

FP2 at the Singapore Grand Prix was memorable for all of the wrong reasons. Featuring two red flags, Oscar Piastri topped the timing sheets ahead of Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar.

However, as the second red flag period came to a close and teams scrambled to get some laps in for the last 12 minutes of the session, Leclerc appeared to crash into Norris on his exit from the Ferrari garage.

The McLaren driver was lucky to miss out on receiving suspension damage from the incident, but still lost out on valuable minutes as engineers for the British constructor were forced to change his front wing before sending him out again.

F1 fans react to Ferrari’s ‘schoolboy error’ after they release Charles Leclerc into the path of Lando Norris

F1 fans quickly took to social media to express their annoyance over the incident, with the Ferrari engineers emerging as the main culprits on X (formerly Twitter).

In response to a video of the incident from the official F1 account, one user replied, “Schoolboy error from Ferrari.”

Another F1 fan commented, “Ferrari doing Ferrari things,” whilst another posted, “Ferrari get one thing right challenge: impossible.”

It was a dangerous manoeuvre from the Scuderia, considering that there were personnel surrounding the incident that happened in the confines of the pit lane. One fan commented, “Not so much an unsafe release from Ferrari as full-blown reckless.”

Another fan pre-empted the fine that is likely to head Ferrari’s way, replying to the post with, “Very bad from Ferrari garage personnel.”

Another drew attention to the fact that it isn’t the first time that the Prancing Horse has caused an incident in the pit lane, commenting, “It happens only with Ferrari, I guess.”

In his post-session debrief in the media pen, Norris was unfazed by the incident, with the only thing that he had to say on the matter being, “It cost the team a bit of money, which is a shame.”

David Croft slammed Ferrari engineers for the part they played in the incident

During Sky Sports F1’s coverage of FP2, commentator David Croft was astonished by the lack of competency shown by the Ferrari engineers.

As a replay of the incident was broadcast on the world feed, Croft was almost speechless as he furiously questioned, “Well, why was that Ferrari released? That, I’m sorry, who has released that Ferrari straight into the path of the McLaren?”

Knowing they were at fault for the collision, Ferrari engineers helped their McLaren counterparts in pushing the stricken MCL39 back into the garage.

A punishment for the Scuderia is yet to be determined, but it is extremely likely to happen.

Despite the incident, Norris was able to set the fifth fastest time of the session, with Leclerc finding himself just under a second off the pace with the ninth quickest time.

The grid will reconvene for FP3 and qualifying on the streets of Singapore on Saturday.
