Eddie Jordan shares new idea for making F1 more exciting after dreary Spanish GP

Eddie Jordan has explained what he would do to make Formula 1 more exciting after a dull Spanish Grand Prix.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Jordan was asked about what the sport can do to make it more engaging for fans.

Max Verstappen was victorious once again after a straightforward race at the Circuit de Catalunya.

He finished nearly 25 seconds ahead of second-place Lewis Hamilton and lapped nearly half the field.

Further down the grid, aside from a piece of contact between Hamilton and Lando Norris on the first lap, there was very little action.

George Russell managed to finish third after qualifying outside of the top ten but made up most of those places before lap two or during the pit stops.

Red Bull continue their domination of the grid and have won every race this season.

It was a nice change to see Mercedes turn out to be their closest competitor rather than Aston Martin.

However, Eddie Jordan has been unimpressed with how exciting Formula 1 has been this season.

He believes changes are required quickly to avoid F1 becoming unwatchable.

Jordan shares idea for making Formula 1 more exciting

Asked about improvements the sport could consider, Jordan said: “That’s a fantastic question because I’m not sure there’s a really easy solution to that.

“Just to give you an idea of what happens in some of the races these days, I don’t want to put artificial pieces in to make it happen, but when a driver wins so many races they put weight penalties.

“A little bit like they do in horse racing, except for the major races where they have to go in at the same rate.

“At grand prix, you can’t have people spending the kind of money that they’re spending to go and watch a spectacle which is not a spectacle. It’s boring, it’s absolutely tedious.

“Any anyone who’s been in it all their lives, I’m sitting there and I’m feeling really disappointed for all the people who have spent so much money to go to that race in Barcelona and to came away and say ‘We never even saw anything, it was horrible’.

“It was ridiculous, yes there was overtaking but in a way that’s all fake because it’s done by wings and DRS and various other things.

“Let us try and find some solution that equalizes the grid for heaven’s sake, it’s just crazy.”

It’s very unlikely that the likes of Red Bull would ever allow a rule to be created that penalised them for winning.

However, right now it looks very unlikely that anyone will be able to challenge them this season.

Mercedes have improved with the upgrades they’ve installed recently but are still some way off Christian Horner’s team.

Formula 1 needs to come up with something to make the racing more exciting, even if Jordan’s weight penalties aren’t necessarily the solution.
