David Coulthard shares which Formula 1 driver currently on the grid reminds him of Conor McGregor

It’s not easy to draw parallels between the worlds of Formula 1 and MMA.

Although athletes in both disciplines have to be incredibly fit, the term ‘fighting’ means two very different things in each sport.

Formula 1 has seen its fair share of aggressive drivers, and the likes of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher developed reputations for making sure they won at all costs.

David Coulthard raced against the latter during his F1 career and speaking on The Red Flags Podcast, made a comparison with another driver who fits into that category.

There have been some brilliant battles on track this season, but the most talked-about incidents have all involved one man.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen is closing in on a fourth Formula 1 world championship and could secure that title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Although former F1 driver Giedo van der Garde has predicted Verstappen to miss out on victory in Las Vegas, it’s only a matter of time before he clinches the championship.

Verstappen and Lando Norris have tangled on several occasions this season, with the Dutchman keen to make sure his nearest rival can’t utilise having a superior car to close the deficit in the Drivers’ Championship.

Coulthard has now shared why he thinks Verstappen is just like MMA star Conor McGregor and even compared his title battle with Norris to his infamous fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Coulthard was asked about this season’s title battle and made an interesting comparison: “Look, remember when Floyd Mayweather accepted the invitation from Conor McGregor to fight each other?

“There’s a reason why he fought him in boxing and not UFC or MMA because he’s got control of that territory.

“So Max is Conor McGregor, he’s UFC and Lando at the moment is an incredibly talented boxer.

“But, who’s going to win if there was no rules? And it’s going to be the guy with the exception of eye gouging, everything else goes!

“And Max has been doing that for a long time. So, Lando will get there and he’ll get there and he’ll win more races, he’ll win championships on his talent.

“But Max, that’s why he deserves to be in the same category as an Ayrton [Senna], as a Michael [Schumacher].”

The upcoming race in Las Vegas begins the final triple-header of the longest season in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen knows that a win will be enough to secure his fourth F1 title, although McLaren and Ferrari will hope that they still have a pace advantage over Red Bull.

The 27-year-old has put himself in a position where he doesn’t need to win every race to earn the title, with the pressure very much on Norris to be absolutely perfect throughout the final three Grand Prix.

Verstappen will be glad Las Vegas organisers have removed one event he hated from last year’s pre-race routine, especially as the time zone makes life particularly difficult for drivers.

They then have to adapt to racing in Qatar a week later before the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Jos Verstappen has warned that Max’s enjoyment of F1 has reduced due to the hectic schedule.

Verstappen has always insisted that he won’t be racing in F1 for as long as the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, but he’s still got plenty more races and championships to win before he walks away.
