Visa Cash App RB driver Liam Lawson has been given six races to prove he’s worthy of a full-time Formula 1 seat and has already made a very positive impression.

The United States Grand Prix couldn’t have gone much better for Liam Lawson.

The 22-year-old was promoted into a race seat at RB in place of Daniel Ricciardo after the Australian failed to do enough to convince Red Bull he would be an upgrade on Sergio Perez.

Lawson already knew he would be starting at the back of the grid for Sunday’s race after picking up several engine penalties and only had one practice session to get used to the car.

Fernando Alonso and Lawson battled during the Sprint Race, but the Kiwi made light work of the two-time world champion in Sunday’s race on his way to scoring two valuable points for RB.

Yuki Tsunoda failed to finish in the top ten and Haas overtook RB in the Constructors’ Championship, but Lawson managed to limit the damage.

Lawson now has five more races to either confirm his place at RB next year or potentially even replace Perez at Red Bull with the Mexican struggling to live up to expectations.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, former driver David Coulthard was speaking to Eddie Jordan about the youngster.

Asked by Jordan where he would be aiming to place Lawson next year if he was in charge of his future, Coulthard couldn’t help but suggest that he shouldn’t be hanging around in Red Bull’s junior team for too long.

While talking about F1’s newest driver, Jordan asked Coulthard: “I’ve got to ask you a question.

“[If] you’re Liam’s manager and you say to yourself, look, we need to work quickly here on this because we need to do that, that, that, that.

“Where do you place him or where do you try to place him? What is in your mindset or how do you do it?”

Coulthard answered: “Red Bull had an option date that they had to take up the option [on Lawson’s contract], otherwise he became a free agent.

“They’ve taken up that option, which I don’t know the terms of his contract, but they now have him under contract and can observe how he finishes this year.

“If he continues to score points and he continues to go wheel to wheel or ideally in front of Tsunoda, then he’s got to be looked at as a Checo replacement at Red Bull Racing.

“Checo, well, we had George Russell starting in the pit lane and finishing in front of Checo. That’s again another sobering performance.

“The results are just not close to where Max is. So I would’ve got to imagine that Red Bull will be looking at Liam’s performance and if he delivers, then maybe he’s at Red Bull Racing.”

Liam Lawson leaves RB engineer speechless after US Grand Prix performance

Lawson did a solid job in the Sprint Race in Austin, but he really started turning heads in qualifying for the Grand Prix.

He set the third-fastest time in Q1, before being sacrificed in Q2 to try and help Tsunoda reach the top-ten shootout knowing he would be starting from the back row of the grid no matter what time he set.

In the race, Lawson started on the hard tyres and ran as long as he could to create a delta that would allow him to work his way through the pack to potentially score some points.

Not only did he achieve this, but his lap times were faster on older hard tyres and Tsunoda on a new set when he pitted earlier in the race.

Lawson left his race engineer speechless with his performance in Austin and if he continues on that trajectory, then Verstappen might line up alongside his sixth different teammate in F1.
