David Coulthard feels Kimi Antonelli actions after Monaco GP win were ‘worrying’ for George Russell

David Coulthard thinks Kimi Antonelli has dealt another worrying blow to George Russell, as he did not appear to be surprised by his win at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Italian has made it five wins in a row with his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. Meanwhile, it was another disaster for Russell, as a drive-through penalty dropped him out of the points in P12.

Having not finished on the podium in the last four races, Russell has fallen behind Lewis Hamilton to P3 in the standings. He is now 68 points behind Mercedes teammate Antonelli, who is only getting stronger by the second.

Kimi Antonelli ‘worryingly’ had no surprise in his eyes after Monaco Grand Prix win

Russell lacked ‘confidence’ in the W17 in Monaco, while his teammate was flawless as he claimed his first career grand slam. He has a huge mountain to climb to clinch the 2026 title, but Antonelli is on another level, and he looks completely unfazed.

Coulthard noticed that the 19-year-old did not have ‘any surprise’ in his eyes after claiming the win. He feels it is worrying for Russell and his rivals, as ‘this is his normality’ and he is completely relaxed about the situation.

He said on the Up To Speed podcast: “You could see the sense of achievement, unquestionably. But actually, worryingly for George and worryingly for his competitors, it didn’t look like there was any surprise in those eyes.

What is it going to take for George Russell to get back in the title fight?

“If you remember back to when Jenson Button won his first Grand Prix in Budapest, there was a picture where someone photographed, his eyes are like this because he’s delighted, he’s surprised and everything.

“Kimi, he’s now, this is his normality. He’s won more Grands Prix, he’s won five in a row, than some people ever win in their career.

“And to win five in one season, has won world championships and many a Grand Prix championship. Some guys have won one race in a season and won the world championship. So yeah, this is just another day in the office for him.”

George Russell told to stop the excuses in 2026

Bad luck has been somewhat of a factor in Russell’s slump in form. The timing of the safety car let him down at Suzuka, while the Brit described Miami as a bogey track.

But in Montreal, a circuit where he has typically done well, he was comprehensively beaten by Antonelli. Then in Monaco, Russell said his driving style does not suit the W17 as he again lacked pace to his teammate.

Is Kimi Antonelli about to run away with the championship, or will it be close?

But many people are growing tired of the 28-year-old’s words. Coulthard does not accept Russell’s excuses, telling him that he needs to unlock the potential of the car and find answers with his engineers.

Likewise, Damon Hill has told Russell to stop the mind games and just focus on his driving. He is running out of time to close the gap, especially with Hamilton now piling on the pressure.
