Anthony Davidson spotted George Russell’s clear lack of ‘confidence’ at the Monaco Grand Prix after looking at his onboard camera.

After seeing his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli reel off four victories in a row, the pressure is now firmly on Russell to step up his game.

Heading into this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, Russell trails Antonelli by 43 points, with the young Italian producing commanding performances.

On Saturday, the 19-year-old’s form continued as Antonelli secured pole position ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Meanwhile, Russell, who struggled throughout the session, only managed to put his Mercedes P6.

Anthony Davidson saw George Russell’s clear lack of ‘confidence’ during Monaco GP qualifying

In between Q2 and Q3, Davidson compared Russell and Antonelli’s laps via the onboard camera.

The 47-year-old stated that Russell was lacking confidence and did not know how to trust the car.

In comparison, Antonelli was full of confidence as he managed to control the car effectively.

Davidson said on Sky Sports F1: “Where is this going wrong for George Russell? Into Turn 1, watch on the exit, just loses the rear, and then he is fighting that Mercedes up the hill.

“At Massenet, he is a bit tentative; he probably doesn’t trust the rear of the car so much, based on what happened at Turn 1.

“Down towards Turn 5, again, he doesn’t quite know when to turn in and how to trust the car. The hairpin itself was okay.

“I just thought I would compare it to Antonelli at the same corner at Mirabeau; he just seems much more confident to turn in properly and get the car to rotate.

“I’m seeing a little bit of difference in driver confidence in what they’ve got under them.”

George Russell left ‘bamboozled’ by recent struggles

Speaking after qualifying, Russell claimed that this year’s car is not suiting his driving style and went on to say he is currently ‘bamboozled’ by his struggles.

Russell said: “There’s definitely some things we’ve seen that the changes with this year’s car, with my natural driving style doesn’t suit it as last year’s car did. Kimi and I have had different driving styles.

“I don’t want to go into too much detail but it was clear last year and it’s clear this year, but obviously last year it suited me just fine and this year it’s suiting him perfectly well.

“So either I need to adjust to this and I’ll do my best to do that, but it still doesn’t answer why the start of the year was such a breeze. I don’t know. A bit bamboozled right now.”
