McLaren driver Lando Norris added his name to the list of drivers who have won their home races in Formula 1.
Lando Norris led home McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri at the British Grand Prix, with the pair joined by Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg on the podium.
Norris found racing Piastri ‘stressful’ and ultimately benefited from his 10-second penalty for an infringement behind the safety car.
Max Verstappen looked like a threat to Norris’ chances of winning the race until he made an unusual error behind the safety car as the race was set to be restarted.
| RANK | DRIVER | TEAM | POINTS |
| 1 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 25 |

Norris suggested that he was cheering on Lewis Hamilton leading into the race, but when the lights went out, his only aim was to win his home race in front of his very own grandstand for the first time.
Damon Hill, who won the 1994 British Grand Prix for Williams, was commentating on the race.
He shared his reaction to Norris’ victory before explaining why an extremely upset Piastri was right to be penalised by the stewards at Silverstone.

Damon Hill congratulates Lando Norris after winning the British Grand Prix
Norris won the race by 6.8 seconds from Piastri, with Hulkenberg nearly a further half a minute behind the Australian.
Lewis Hamilton couldn’t add to his run of consecutive podiums at his home race, finishing fourth, with Verstappen recovering to P5.
Hill posted on Instagram immediately after the race, simply saying: “Wow, what a day!!!” in reference to Norris picking up the eighth win of his Formula 1 career, and his first back-to-back victories at this level.
When speaking about the biggest decisions that needed to be made during the race, including the switch onto slick tyres, Hill told BBC 5 Live on commentary: “This is what we said at the beginning, isn’t it? It’s opportunities.
“The thing is you’ve got opportunities in a race like this, you need a bit of luck, and you need to make the right decisions and be a little bit brave.
“We saw Fernando Alonso and George Russell go to the slicks a little bit too soon, Lewis Hamilton got it just about right.
“Oscar Piastri will be ruing that decision to stamp on the brakes, I have to say I do think that is the right decision, I don’t think it was the right thing to be doing when you are leading the pack behind the safety car.”

Lando Norris claims ‘beautiful’ British Grand Prix win is ‘everything’ he ever dreamed of
Norris, when asked about winning his home race for the first time in his post-race interview, explained: “It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess.
“Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it.
“This is where it all started for me, I was actually watching you [Jenson Button] on TV many years ago, and now thankfully I’ve been able to have my go.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |

| 2 | Lando Norris | 226 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 165 |
| 4 | George Russell | 147 |

| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 63 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 46 |

“Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the fans, it made the difference today, so I’ve got to thank them for it all.”
Norris has now closed the gap to Piastri to eight points in the drivers’ championship.
It means either of them could be the favourite heading into the upcoming summer break after back-to-back races in Belgium and Hungary.
McLaren have essentially wrapped up the constructors’ championship, which should allow for some incredible racing during the second half of the 2025 season.
