McLaren secured another one-two finish during the 2025 Formula 1 season at the British Grand Prix.
It was an incredibly exciting race with plenty of talking points, but McLaren driver Lando Norris ended up taking the chequered flag.
Oscar Piastri was the most visibly frustrated he’s ever been after a race after losing the lead of the Grand Prix due to a 10-second time penalty.
The drivers’ championship leader was penalised for braking too hard behind the safety car, and Max Verstappen nearly drove into the back of his McLaren as a result.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 216 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 201 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 155 |
| 4 | George Russell | 146 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 119 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 91 |
| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 63 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 42 |
| 9 | Esteban Ocon | 23 |
| 10 | Nico Hulkenberg | 22 |
Verstappen spun off before the race even restarted, effectively guaranteeing McLaren first and second, with Nico Hulkenberg securing a famous podium finish.
Piastri thinks he spotted a weakness in Norris during the race weekend but couldn’t find a way to negate the 10 seconds he had to give up during his final pit stop.
His teammate was very complimentary immediately after the race, before paying credit to his team and the fans at Silverstone.

Lando Norris says Oscar Piastri put up a ‘good fight’ at the British Grand Prix
Asked in his official post-race interview by Jenson Button about the race, Norris said: “In terms of being a stressful race, this is as stressful as you can get.
“I mean it was a good race for Oscar as well, I’ve got to give credit to Oscar, he was fast the whole way.
“So, a round of applause for Oscar because he put up a good fight, and I enjoyed those moments together when we’re on track.
“Not as much when he’s ahead of me as when he’s behind, but that’s life.
“Still, credit to him and of course, McLaren. To win at home in front of all the friends and family we have here is pretty amazing.
“So, thanks to them.”

Should Oscar Piastri have been penalised for his driving behind the safety car at the British Grand Prix?
It was revealed after the race that Piastri used twice as much pressure on the brakes behind the safety car as George Russell in a similar situation at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Piastri was visibly upset and asked after the race, ‘So you can’t brake behind the safety car anymore?’ and admitted that he would be ‘banned’ if he said too much on the team radio.
The timing of Piastri’s acceleration and braking appeared to be unfortunate as it coincided with the safety car signalling that it would be coming in at the end of the lap.
Piastri is now only eight points ahead of Norris in the drivers’ championship at the halfway stage of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Button thinks Piastri is the worst teammate to have on the grid, given his impressive speed and his unflappability.
However, Norris was quick to praise him after the British Grand Prix and didn’t appear to be flustered in his battle to win his first world championship.
