Adrian Newey shares what his ‘dream’ position is at Aston Martin

With Adrian Newey now set to join Aston Martin next season, it puts the marquee car brand on course to fight for titles in the future.

Aston Martin has yet to produce a car that can win a race since it rejoined the grid in 2021, but Adrian Newey’s arrival gives them a proven asset that will make rival teams worry heading into the 2026 regulations.

He is the best at exploiting the potential performance areas in a new regulation set, as he did with Red Bull with the current generation of ground-effect cars.

This is why several teams sought after his signature after announcing he would be leaving Red Bull at the end of the season.

Newey said that he was impressed by billionaire team owner Lawrence Stroll’s hands-on approach to the team, which he deemed was ‘very persuasive’ when making his decision.

Discussing his move to Aston Martin on the High-Performance podcast, Newey outlined his dream role in the future with the team.

With Newey approaching 66 years old in December this year, he will be close to 70 once his multi-year contract is up for renewal at Aston Martin.

While Newey has stated that he intends to continue in F1 for as long as possible, he has also said that he would like to take a more hands-off approach as he gets older due to the stresses.

He believes the best scenario would be to emulate former Ferrari car designer Rory Byrne, who stayed on at the team as a consultant years after their title success with Michael Schumacher in the early 00s.

“My dream would be in a position, a bit like Rory Byrne has achieved with Ferrari, where I can then be a respected and regarded consultant to that team without being involved every day and day to day. Kind of making a step back,” said Newey.

His manager and former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan claimed that several teams were asking for Newey’s signature in a bid to secure his services ahead of the 2026 season.

Newey was close to making a move to Ferrari after talks reached an advanced stage between the pair, but team principal Frederic Vasseur rejected his offer.

Both his former team Williams and Alpine also made late bids for Newey’s services, however, neither were seen as much of an attractive option compared to Aston Martin.

Newey now faces the chance to work with Fernando Alonso, a driver he has always admired, and in a team that has just had its Silverstone facilities renewed into a state-of-the-art factory and wind tunnel.
