With just 11 Grand Prix left this season, it appears as though the 2025 drivers’ championship is set to be decided between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Going into the Belgian Grand Prix, it was Australian driver Oscar Piastri who had an eight-point advantage over Lando Norris.
The constructors’ championship appears to be almost wrapped up for McLaren, as they extended their advantage over Ferrari to 268 points by the end of the weekend.
It won’t be long until they mathematically can’t be caught, but until then, Zak Brown and Andrea Stella will be keen for their drivers to race fair.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 266 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 250 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 185 |
| 4 | George Russell | 157 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 139 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 109 |
| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 63 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 54 |
| 9 | Nico Hulkenberg | 37 |
| 10 | Esteban Ocon | 27 |
Piastri took pole position for the Sprint Race before being beaten down the Kemmel Straight by Max Verstappen, and then he watched Norris set the fastest time in qualifying for Sunday’s race.
Unfortunately for Norris, he couldn’t stop Piastri doubling his lead in the drivers’ championship by the time the chequered flag flew at Spa.
Damon Hill labelled Piastri’s move on Norris as ‘extraordinary’, with the Australian getting the better of his teammate after a delayed rolling start.
Martin Brundle thinks he spotted what cost Norris what could have been an important victory, and plenty of fans have now made up their mind that the title won’t be his this year.

F1 fans agree with Martin Brundle that small ‘errors’ could cost Lando Norris the championship
Speaking on Sky Sports F1 (27/7 4:48 pm) at the conclusion of Sunday’s race, commentator David Croft said about Norris: “He could have had a chance without those three slip-ups, he could have had the chance to get into the DRS range to try and make an overtake on his teammate.”
Brundle replied: “Yep, if he’d have had a totally faultless drive, without the three errors we saw, then you’re right, he would have been right on his gearbox.”
Plenty of fans agreed that Norris’ mistakes were what cost him on Sunday after a gamble to change onto the hard tyres rather than the medium compound didn’t quite pay off.
One fan said: “Oscar is on a beautiful path to mastery. Each successive point of advantage over Lando increases pressure on Norris. Tracks are approaching where the wall is the limit, one Lando mistake and we have the end of the championship.”
Another comment read: “Piastri is the next World Champion. He’s just more of a machine.”
“Lando lost the Championship today,” one fan replied, while another person said: “Is it me, or Norris just isn’t that dude?”
“I think the championship is wrapped up. Piastri is simply better than Norris,” read another response online.
Finally, one comment suggested: “People can say what they want, but Piastri today showed levels. He went all aggressive at the start, took a risk and overtook Norris, stayed consistent, made the right call to box and is still putting out laps with that medium tyre. He outsmarted Norris, as simple as that.”

After the race, Norris was quick to praise Piastri’s performance, suggesting that he made fewer mistakes during a very difficult race.
In the past, Norris has been accused of being too hard on himself, but on this occasion, he was quick to see the positives.

He will recognise that the gap in the championship is still relatively small, and it will only take one slip-up from his teammate for him to potentially re-take the lead.
However, when it mattered, the small errors he made after the first lap were the difference.
He was catching Piastri at a decent rate, although it’s unknown just how much life was left in Piastri’s tyres, or whether he was simply managing the gap until the final few laps.
