James Vowles is playing a key role in bringing Williams back to the front in Formula 1 as their team principal, so here is everything that you need to know about him.

Vowles took over as team principal of Williams in January 2023 after agreeing to replace Jost Capito, who was briefly with the team from 2020 to 2022.

Having spent most of his F1 life at one team, embarking on a new challenge at Williams was seen as a big step for Vowles, who had harboured ambitions of taking on the team principal role at Mercedes.

Now, Vowles is tasked with turning around Williams’ fortunes and bringing them back to their glory years, and his CV suggests that he might be the right man for the job.

James Vowles started his F1 career at BAR Honda in 2001

Having studied at the International School of Geneva, Vowles graduated in 1997 with an International Baccalaureate. He would go on to obtain a degree in computer science in 2000 at the University of East Anglia, before applying for jobs in F1 teams.

Vowles believed he could apply his mathematical expertise to motorsport, but he was rejected by most teams because they did not require any mathematicians at the time.

After going on to achieve a master’s degree in Motorsport Engineering and Management in 2001 at Cranfield University, Vowles won the Prodrive Award of Excellence for designing a race car for the Jim Russell Racing School.

A chance to work in Formula 1 also finally arrived for Vowles in 2001, as he joined BAR Honda and worked with 1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve.

Vowles remained loyal to the Brackley-based team as BAR Honda transformed into the factory Honda team in 2006 and later Brawn GP in 2009, when Ross Brawn took over the team following Honda’s sudden withdrawal amid the global financial crisis.

The 2006 season also saw Vowles celebrate his first win with the Brackley-based outfit when Jenson Button won that year’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Button would win the F1 drivers’ championship for Brawn GP in 2009, as well, before the team transformed again in 2010 after Mercedes took control.

Vowles became a part of F1 folklore when Brawn GP won the 2009 F1 drivers’ championship with Button, having adopted a new role within the team to be a part of their race strategy department.

From there, he played a key role in how both Button and Rubens Barrichello achieved success for Brawn GP, with the Briton going on to win six of the first seven Grands Prix on his way to the drivers’ title.

Brawn GP’s double diffuser led to their blistering performance, but it was also thanks to the impressive team effort behind the scenes that they managed to achieve such success.

After success in 2009, the team were bought out by Mercedes, which would kickstart another successful chapter in Vowles’ F1 career.

It was a tough start to life at Mercedes in 2010, as the team almost had to start from scratch after being unable to develop the Brawn BGP 001. But the Silver Arrows’ arrival saw Vowles get to work with seven-time champion Michael Schumacher.

Vowles learned a lot from Schumacher, who also taught Nico Rosberg a lot about how to win titles when they were teammates, and it would come in handy years later.

It wasn’t until 2014 that Mercedes started to challenge for titles after Lewis Hamilton also joined the team. The start of the 1.6L V6 turbo-hybrid era brought Mercedes unparalleled success, with Vowles playing a crucial role in their strategic decisions.

Vowles would be promoted to motorsport strategy director, which made him responsible for looking after Mercedes’ upcoming talent alongside his role in the trackside operations.

Between 2014 and 2022, Vowles was a part of 112 Grand Prix wins, eight constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles, while working alongside Hamilton, Rosberg, Valtteri Bottas and George Russell.
