McLaren once again returned to the top of the practice timing sheets, with Lando Norris leading the pack above Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Norris will be hoping for a smooth weekend as he attempts to close the 34-point gap to his teammate Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ championship.
FP2 for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix was a relatively uneventful session, with most cars opting to do longer runs, although the majority of cars opted to use the soft tyre.
Two teams that showed impressive pace throughout the session were Williams and Sauber, with Carlos Sainz sitting in one of the top positions for most of the session. Sauber were slower than the Williams but ultimately were still at the top of the mid-pack.
Williams cannot be discounted from the weekend after a strong display in both Friday sessions.
Ferrari once again demonstrated a strong performance through the session, despite Hamilton reporting power issues with their car. Despite Leclerc finishing second, the Monegasque was complaining that the car was difficult to control, suggesting Ferrari are still struggling with a higher fuel load.
Many of the cars struggled with exiting the second Lesmo, dipping their cars into the gravel. Alex Albon had a nasty wobble heading out of the corner, dragging his car along the kerb.
Kimi Antonelli falters in his Mercedes for a second weekend
Kimi Antonelli caused a red flag during the session after just 10 minutes, in a spin very reminiscent of his crash during his FP1 Monza debut with Mercedes last year. It was a disappointing start to the session for the young Italian, with Antonelli appearing to lose the rear of the car before spinning off into the gravel.
Antonelli would have been hoping for a clean weekend as he continues contract talks with Mercedes for next season.
Gabriel Bortoleto will be investigated after the session, after failing to slow under double-waved yellow flags, when Antonelli spun. If the Brazilian is found to be at fault, he could see a grid penalty for Sunday’s grand prix.
Oscar Piastri has also been called to the stewards following the session, after the McLaren was released from his garage before the all-clear was given from the red flag, allowing cars to line up in the pit lane.
