Formula 1 is heading to the ‘Temple of Speed’ this weekend for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. Here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s race at Monza.

Ferrari will be aiming for podium glory this weekend after a disappointing double DNF at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend. Lewis Hamilton crashed out of the race at Zandvoort on Lap 23 after touching the paint at Turn 3, which sent his SF-25 spinning into the barrier.

Leclerc was later taken out of the race by Kimi Antonelli after he misjudged an overtake at the same place. The Mercedes rookie entered the corner with too much speed and struggled with understeer on the banking, which saw him clip the tyre of the Ferrari.

Ferrari’s DNF woes were further compounded when Hamilton was handed a 5-place grid penalty for Monza after failing to slow for double-waved yellow flags at the end of the warm-up lap. Despite the penalty, Hamilton will be hoping to take his first podium in front of the Tifosi at Monza this weekend.

Piastri will also be hoping to take his first Italian Grand Prix win, especially considering his Italian roots. The Aussie extended his championship lead to 34 points in Zandvoort, after his teammate Lando Norris suffered a mechanical failure, which forced him to retire with just seven laps to go.

The 2025 Italian Grand Prix is the first race weekend since Austria where rain has not been forecast over the course of the three days. Sunny weather and temperatures 10°C higher than last weekend in Zandvoort could make for some interesting racing at Monza.

Friday 5 September 2025 – FP1/FP2: Friday will see sunny intervals, with all cloud forecast to disperse before the start of FP1. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 29°C at the start of FP2, with slightly cooler temperatures of 26°C for FP1.

Saturday 6 September 2025 – FP3/Qualifying: Saturday is expected to be sunny all day with temperatures reaching highs of 27°C. Once again the later Qualifying session will see warmer temperatures, which could impact tyre degradation on the circuit.

Sunday 7 September 2025 – Race: The Tifosi will be happy to hear that the race day is expected to be warm, sunny and most importantly, dry. Temperatures around the start of the Italian Grand Prix at 3 pm (track time) look set to reach highs of 26°C.

What is the Pirelli tyre allocation for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix?

Pirelli have opted to repeat the 2024 Italian Grand Prix compounds for this year’s race at Monza, using the C3 Hard, C4 Medium and C5 Soft tyres. The tyre supplier has chosen to keep the tyre allocation the same, due to the low aerodynamic downforce configuration that the cars run during the weekend – the lowest of the entire season.

Pirelli expect that the level of graining should be lower than last year now that Monza has had twelve months for the surface to bed in. We can expect a potential one-stop strategy for the Italian Grand Prix weekend, with teams expected to attempt longer stints on the Medium and Hard tyres due to the high amount of time lost during a pit stop.

Pirelli have noted that the warmer temperatures forecast could speed up tyre degradation, which could potentially result in some two-stop strategies being played.

Where is the 2025 Italian Grand Prix held?

The 2025 Italian Grand Prix will be held at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza also known as the Monza Circuit. This is the 75th year that the Italian Grand Prix has taken place at Monza, when it joined the inaugural Formula 1 season in 1950.

Monza is also known as the ‘Temple of Speed’ and is one of the fastest tracks on the F1 calendar, with an average speed of 161.4mph, beating Jeddah, Albert Park and Silverstone for the record.

Unsurprisingly, Ferrari holds the record for the most wins at their home circuit, taking a total of 21 victories, 10 ahead of second-place McLaren.

2025 Italian Grand Prix starting grid

Max Verstappen will start from pole for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, after snatching the lead from Lando Norris in a tight qualifying session.

Lewis Hamilton has been dropped to P.10 after being given a five-place grid penalty for his debut Monza race with Ferrari. Hamilton was handed the penalty after failing to slow for double-waved yellow flags during last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.

Isack Hadjar will start from the pit lane after taking a new power unit in his Racing Bulls car. Hadjar had qualified in 16th after the team really struggled to set a fast lap time during the qualifying session.

Who won the 2024 Italian Grand Prix?

The 2024 Italian Grand Prix was won by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. The driver pulled off an impressive one-stop strategy in front of the Tifosi, pipping the McLaren drivers Piastri and Norris who had started on the front row.

Ferrari opted to only pit their drivers once during the race, with McLaren opting for the alternate strategy. This saw Leclerc and Carlos Sainz running in first and second in the latter stages of the race.

Sainz struggled with his ageing tyres, being overtaken by Norris and Piastri for the final podium places.

Leclerc claimed an emotional win on Ferrari’s home soil, the team’s first since his last win at Monza in 2019.
