Formula 1 is headed to Monza for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton targeting his first Ferrari podium at the team’s home race.
Ferrari faced heartbreak at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend with both drivers crashing out of the race in Zandvoort. The Italian-based team will be hoping to make a comeback on Sunday in front of their home crowd, the dedicated Tifosi.
Oscar Piastri will be looking to extend his championship lead after taking the gap from 9 to 34 points last weekend. Championship rival and fellow McLaren teammate Lando Norris suffered a mechanical failure with seven laps remaining, ensuring that Piastri added a full 25 points to the championship gap.
Our expert writers have shared their predictions on this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, including who will take pole, the win and whether Lewis Hamilton can secure that all-important first Ferrari podium.
Who will start from pole for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix?
Rory Mitchell – Oscar Piastri:
“Given how Piastri is meticulous at looking at data and improving his lap time, Monza is one of those circuits which reward that kind of approach.
“All of the time is made up in the chicanes, as that is where you slingshot onto the straights. McLaren haven’t been the fastest in the speed traps, but their Monza-spec car shouldn’t deviate too much from their current form based on how well they went at Saudi Arabia and Silverstone.
“Norris needs to make up the points gap to Piastri, but the Australian showed in Zandvoort that he can find those extra hundredths if he’s behind.”
Who will win the 2025 Italian Grand Prix?
David Comerford – Lando Norris
“This is a must-win race for Norris, and one wonders if Piastri will start to drive a little conservatively now that he has a sizeable lead. It may not be a conscious decision, but his first world championship is in sight and that could change his behaviour. Ralf Schumacher thinks Norris could thrive now that he has nothing to lose, and this race will certainly offer a telling indication of whether he’s world champion material.”
Which driver will be the biggest surprise at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix?
Ben Evans – Franco Colapinto
“Franco Colapinto is in desperate need of points with his Alpine future on the line.
There were clear signs at the Dutch Grand Prix that he’s still improving, and was unlucky to miss out on a top 10 finish by less than a second to Esteban Ocon.
“Returning to the track where he made his F1 debut with Williams could be just what he needs to finally kickstart his Alpine career, as he can use the experience he gained last season to his advantage. Colapinto is quickly running out of time to convince Flavio Briatore and Alpine that he deserves a race seat in 2026, and Monza could be the perfect circuit to prove he’s got what it takes.”
Will Lewis Hamilton get his first Ferrari podium at Monza?
“Round 16 of the 2025 F1 season sees Lewis Hamilton race at the Italian Grand Prix for the first time as a Ferrari driver. But it is very unlikely that the Briton will delight the Scuderia’s passionate Tifosi by taking his first Grand Prix podium finish for Ferrari at Monza.
“The Tifosi showed Hamilton just how quickly they had welcomed him into their hearts after signing his contract with Ferrari in February last year when F1 headed to Monza that August. Just Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who was still driving for Ferrari, got greater applause.
“But the optimism and joy that Hamilton and the Tifosi held when he formally joined Ferrari at the start of 2025 has vanished. The 40-year-old heads to Monza still without a Grand Prix podium in red, having never previously failed to reach a rostrum beyond the first 10 rounds.
“Additionally, Hamilton must serve a five-place grid penalty in the Italian GP, as he failed to slow for double-waved yellow flags whilst practising entering the pit lane before the Dutch Grand Prix. His penalty will leave Hamilton needing a lot to go in his favour at Monza now.”
