Yuki Tsunoda was left fuming after being undercut by teammate Liam Lawson during the United States Grand Prix.
Liam Lawson returned to the F1 grid after replacing Daniel Ricciardo after the Singapore Grand Prix and immediately made an impression with his performance across the weekend.
During the Grand Prix, Lawson faced starting from the back of the grid from 19th after inheriting an engine penalty from Ricciardo.
Visa Cash App RB put him on a one-stop strategy and elected to pit him later in the race by starting on the hard, enabling him to leapfrog several drivers who were on the medium.
When he emerged from the pit lane in 12th place, it was ahead of Tsunoda which prompted the Japanese driver to fume over team radio.
Yuki Tsunoda fumes at engineer after emerging behind Liam Lawson
Tsunoda had started the race from 10th place but dropped back after receiving a time penalty for forcing Nico Hulkenberg off track.
This also caused him to lose more places when he pitted as he served the time penalty, including the position with Lawson who ended up recovering to a points-paying position.
A frustrated Tsunoda vented to his engineer, Ernesto Desiderio, who gave him a blunt response when discussing it over team radio.
| Driver | Engineer |
| Desiderio: “Yuki, Liam is pitting now. He’s going to be right in front of us with new Medium, we will let him go.” | |
| Tsunoda: “Wait, what the f—-!?” | |
| Tsunoda: “Tell me how this happened!?” | |
| Desiderio: “Yep Yuki, the other car was more powerful than expected and we picked up a five-second penalty for forcing Albon off track. We’re still discussing.” |
Tsunoda would go on to finish the race in 14th place and a lap down, having struggled to make any further progress after the penalty.

Liam Lawson performance hailed amid rumours of Red Bull audition
Lawson will be coming out of the US GP with bundles of confidence having not only scored points on his return but also faced Fernando Alonso in a spat between the two on Saturday.
Alonso was not happy with his driving in the Sprint race which caused both to lose a place to Ocon, however, images of the pair in Parc Ferme show them in a heated discussion.
