With the end of the summer break now upon us, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are set to battle it out over the final ten rounds of the season in hopes of becoming a Formula 1 world champion.

Piastri currently leads Norris by nine points in the drivers’ standings. The British driver clawed his way back to minimise the deficit before the summer break, winning three of the four final Grands Prix of the first half of the season.

Jolyon Palmer has pointed out Piastri’s bad luck in those recent races. The 24-year-old was hampered by blue flags in Austria, given a questionable penalty at Silverstone and outdone by a throw of the dice strategy in Hungary.

Position Drivers' Championship Points
1

Oscar Piastri

284
2

Lando Norris

275
3

Max Verstappen

4

George Russell

He could easily have had a more commanding lead in the standings if these things had gone his way.

The two drivers have been at each other’s throats for the majority of the season, but, surprisingly, have only made contact once so far. Despite the clash being the fault of the 25-year-old, F1 paddock insiders have seen a happier Norris since.

Andrea Stella doesn’t want the 2025 F1 title fight to ‘destroy’ McLaren internally

Fred Vasseur has described McLaren as ‘magic’ this season, but with the new 2026 F1 regulations coming into effect next season, there’s no guarantee that the Woking-based outfit will find itself at the top of the pecking order in the coming seasons.

There will be work to be done next year, as a team, to make sure that McLaren’s F1 cars are on the correct development path. That means that Norris and Piastri will both need to be on the same page to set themselves up for more title chances in the future.

Speaking on an episode of The Race F1 Podcast, journalist Nelson Valkenburg highlighted a ‘difference in language’ from McLaren chief Andrea Stella at the most recent Hungarian Grand Prix that shows his angst at the possibility of the current title fight having a profound effect on the team in the future.

“I noticed a difference in language from Andrea Stella in the last race before the summer break, and he started to talk about how it’s no longer about whether or not you hit each other, but whatever happens cannot destroy the team for the upcoming years,” Valkenburg said.

“That’s the new threshold for McLaren. You can go at it, you can make mistakes. He says, “Contact is inevitable.” I’m paraphrasing, but as long as it comes from a mistake, a lack of judgment in that moment, and not something malicious, then it’s okay.

“As long as it doesn’t change the team dynamic and what they’ve got going on right now, for the near future. That’s what McLaren is worried about: to figure out that this doesn’t impact them negatively for next year and the year after.”

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are set to battle it out as the summer break comes to a close

With the final ten races of the current season upon us, we will have a brand new F1 drivers’ champion by the time the chequered flag falls in Abu Dhabi.

Following the emergence of McLaren as a front-running team that had the potential to win a lot of races last season, Norris won three races following the conclusion of the summer break, whilst Piastri could only muster one.

The McLaren battle has drawn comparisons to Prost vs Senna, largely down to the intense rivalry with the pair also hailing from the McLaren garages.

Norris has been likened to Senna in the past. The comparison certainly bodes well for the British driver, with Senna going on to win three titles under the leadership of Ron Dennis at the iconic racing outfit.
