Will Buxton says Max Verstappen will be ‘licking his lips’ watching Kimi Antonelli vs George Russell

As Kimi Antonelli and George Russell battle to win the championship, Max Verstappen could take advantage.

Verstappen earned a P5 finish at the Miami Grand Prix, his best result this season. For many, it was a sign of life from the Red Bull ace.

His performance over the weekend seemed to suggest Verstappen’s eagerness for racing had returned and he was back in the mix for a championship.

Despite Verstappen’s early race spin costing him a possible win, his performance was strong enough to remind everyone why he shouldn’t be ruled out of title contention.

And with the battle between Mercedes’ two riders, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, heating up, Max Verstappen could be experiencing a sense of deja vu.

Max Verstappen could capitalise on Mercedes’ intra-team battle

Will Buxton spoke on the latest episode of Up To Speed about the recent resurgence of Max Verstappen and what it could mean for his title chances.

Seeing Kimi Antonelli and George Russell fight it out for the championship, Verstappen will be confident he can do what he almost did last year, when Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri kept fighting amongst themselves, and win the world championship.

“I think Max would be licking his lips looking back over 2025 and watching how McLaren imploded with a battle between their two teammates, and he very nearly nicked the title from both of them at the end.

“If something similar befalls Mercedes, and given that the upgrades have worked really well for Red Bull. It looked like Miami was a huge step forward.

“Is there the potential for Red Bull to swing in a counter-offensive and steal this thing from under their noses? That, for me, is the more fascinating quandary.”

Max Verstappen cannot get ahead of himself in potential title push

Despite what Will Buxton might think, there is very little chance Max Verstappen will be focused on the title chase right about now.

Verstappen might be back to his best, but this is the first race where he has found a modicum of success this season.

While some might think Verstappen doesn’t have a chance to win the world title this year, it is far too early in the season to rule out the four-time world champion.

And after what he almost pulled off last year, writing him off after two bad performances is definitely not a good idea.

But for Verstappen, his focus shouldn’t be on the title or what any talking head has to say about his chances this season.

Over the coming races, he must do his best to get the most out of Red Bull after the brilliant work they’ve done to improve the car during the recent hiatus.
