Fernando Alonso finds himself in the middle of the Formula 1 driver market, facing another critical decision about his future.

The 45-year-old is out of contract with Aston Martin in 2026, and he plans to decide on his future over the summer. His options include remaining with the Silverstone outfit, joining another team, or retiring.

His situation at Aston Martin is miserable, with the AMR26 and Honda’s engines being desperately unreliable and lacking power. Alonso is anything but calm behind the scenes, leading to speculation that he could leave the team.

Fernando Alonso wants to stay in F1 in 2027 but driving an uncompetitive car is ‘weighing heavily on his mind’

Many have wondered if the seven-time champion will call it quits at the end of the season. In fact, Alonso dropped a huge retirement hint in Barcelona, saying that the 2026 race is likely to be his last at the circuit.

Alonso has said that he would like to end his career on a high, and with Aston Martin’s disastrous situation in 2026, he will not want to walk away on a low note.

According to journalist Lawrence Barretto via F1.com, ‘sources’ say Alonso is ‘leaning towards’ staying in F1 in 2027. However, the idea of him driving another uncompetitive car is ‘weighing heavily’ on his decision-making.

Recently, Alonso has been linked with a return to Alpine, and Flavio Briatore has made no secret of his interest in the Spaniard. The Enstone outfit are improving drastically in 2026, with their Mercedes engines powering them to regular points finishes.

As Barretto writes, one other team in the paddock is understood to be interested in the Aston Martin driver. It could well be Alpine, but it is not entirely clear at this stage.

McLaren could even be an option for Alonso, as he still maintains a great relationship with the team and Zak Brown. However, that would depend on whether Max Verstappen chooses to leave Red Bull, as Oscar Piastri is being eyed as a possible replacement.

Barretto notes that it would be ‘more likely’ that Alonso will want to stick it out with Aston Martin, calling it a ‘lifetime project’ when he renewed his deal in 2024. That project is still in its early stages, with him yet to see the benefit of having Adrian Newey on board, whom he has longed to work with.

Only time will tell what Alonso decides to do for 2027, but it seems clear that he wants to be on the F1 grid. Aston Martin will be under pressure to improve their fortunes and provide a competitive car, as Alpine are currently showing that they could give him a strong package.
