What Liam Lawson has done that might have harmed his chances of earning 2025 Red Bull seat

RB driver Liam Lawson seems to attract controversy and attention every time he steps into his Formula 1 car.

After replacing Daniel Ricciardo at the United States Grand Prix, Liam Lawson has scored points, tussled with an F1 world champion and sworn at a rival for a 2025 race seat.

RB decided to bring in Lawson on a six-race contract although his future is much more secure than that.

The Kiwi will be racing in Formula 1 next year, but it’s yet to be seen which team he’ll be driving for in 2025.

Staying at RB is by no means a bad option for Lawson as he would be allowed to continue developing as a driver under less pressure to succeed.

However, Sergio Perez’s form at Red Bull has been so poor that Lawson could earn a promotion to Red Bull much faster than many would have anticipated.

Speaking on the Chequered Flag Podcast, journalist Andrew Benson and commentator Harry Benjamin were discussing Lawson’s future.

Benjamin believes that Lawson may have harmed his chances of racing for Red Bull in 2025 with his somewhat dramatic return to the sport.

However, Benson thinks Red Bull might look fondly towards his attitude to racing the likes of Perez and Fernando Alonso while also believing he doesn’t pose an immediate threat to Max Verstappen.

What Liam Lawson has done that might have harmed his Red Bull chances

Talking about Lawson’s clash with Perez in Mexico, Benjamin said: “I think he’s trying to stay true to who he is and make himself a name.

“But I think this could go against him a little bit with regards to that Red Bull seat, because they don’t want somebody punchy who’s going to cause problems.

“They’ve got Max Verstappen, who’s their punchy guy who tells it as it is. They want somebody who’s there as a solid backup, don’t they?”

Benson replied: “They like punchy drivers. They like people who get their elbows out and race. They like people who have no respect for their rivals.

“I don’t think they’ll see him as a threat to Verstappen and I think the biggest problem for them potentially is he goes in, he doesn’t do any better than Perez. Then what do they do?”

Liam Lawson and Sergio Perez clash again at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Lawson outperformed Perez in qualifying for the Sprint Race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, reaching SQ3 while the 34-year-old mistimed his final run and was eliminated in 13th.

However, Perez got the better of the young Kiwi in the race, finishing just one position ahead of his rival for his Red Bull seat which was enough to secure 8th and the final point of the race.

Lawson was furious with Perez on his radio after watching his driving style during Saturday’s Sprint Race.

If Perez can extract the full potential from his Red Bull during qualifying, then he shouldn’t be racing Lawson during Sunday’s Grand Prix.

However, that’s not happened often enough and that means it’s more than likely that the pair will clash again at Interlagos.
