F1 journalist Lawrence Barretto thinks George Russell risks becoming the ‘Andy Murray’ of F1 if Toto Wolff gets his long-awaited wish at Mercedes.
Russell has been one of the best drivers on the grid throughout the current season, often overachieving in the Mercedes W16, as shown through the two Grand Prix victories he has under his belt in 2025.
However, the British driver is still without a confirmed extension to his current contract for the upcoming 2026 season, which is partly due to the links between the Silver Arrows and the reigning Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has wanted to sign Verstappen for a number of years now, with many instances of the Austrian executive’s advances being made public after genuine links between the two parties emerged in July.

However, the obvious question is who would the current Red Bull replace if Mercedes were successful in securing his signature?
The obvious answer to that would be Andrea Kimi Antonelli, given Russell’s experience and knowledge of the inner workings of the team. Together, Russell and Verstappen could form a formidable partnership for the Silver Arrows.
However, Wolff is worried about the chemistry changes within Mercedes if Verstappen does find a new home at the Brackley-based factory.

It’s widely known that Russell and Verstappen don’t get on, and Wolff may find himself with round two of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s spat that plagued the team in the mid-2010s.
Journalists Tom Clarkson and Lawrence Barretto touched upon Wolff’s desires to bring the Dutchman to Mercedes, with the latter comparing the ‘unfortunate’ fallout for Russell from the move to Andy Murray’s battle against some of the most iconic figures in the history of tennis.
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast about Russell’s future as a Silver Arrow, Clarkson said, “I’m sure 2026 is in the bag; it’s all in the details about 2027. I think Toto is dying to keep a seat open for Max Verstappen, should he become available in ’27.”
His colleague, Barretto, replied, “I just think that George Russell was in an unfortunate position in the way that Carlos Sainz was at Ferrari, right?
“When Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is up for grabs, Ferrari went and took him, and that is probably the only person who could have taken Carlos’s seat. George is in the same spot.
“Max Verstappen is potentially available. And I guess when Toto, he’s the guy in charge, right? The buck stops with him, and he has to look at what is the best thing for Mercedes.
“It’s just unfortunate, in the way that it was unfortunate for Andy Murray, that Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafa Nadal were around.”

George Russell’s contract extension is expected to be announced imminently
After joining the German constructor as a full-time driver in 2022 following a number of years on the books at the team, Russell has developed into one of the most consistent drivers on the grid.
The 27-year-old beat Hamilton in two out of the three seasons that they called each other teammates, and proved to be a worthy successor as the seven-time world champion moved on to what he thought were greener pastures at Ferrari.

Despite the fact that Russell is clearly the best option for Mercedes to lead their team in the foreseeable future, he is without a confirmed drive for the 2026 season.
Wolff teased that an announcement regarding Russell was ‘super close’ after FP3 at the Singapore Grand Prix, and Martin Brundle believes Russell’s pole position may have given him the upper hand in any further negotiations.
Whilst his position at the team for next year is all but certain, the hesitancy to get a deal done as soon as possible has been somewhat of a strange one from inside the Mercedes set-up.
