Sergio Perez is potentially entering his final few races as a Red Bull Formula 1 driver if he does not improve his form.
Despite calls to drop him during the summer break because he was starting to cost them valuable points in the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull decided to stay with Sergio Perez because they felt he could improve with a better car.
Red Bull’s RB20 has not been the easiest car to drive in recent races, as evidenced by the fact that Max Verstappen’s last win came at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes his team will overtake Red Bull in the Constructors’ battle if they keep the Mexican, while the main reason Red Bull kept Perez was down to the lack of viable options that would do a better job.
But speaking on The Race podcast, journalist Mark Hughes believes two former Red Bull drivers could have done a better job out of the box.
Two drivers who would do a better job than Sergio Perez
Red Bull is known for being a cut-throat environment for drivers having gone through their fair share before the arrival of Perez.
The team expects results out of the box, but given they have not been able to provide a car capable of achieving that, it has bought Perez some time to improve.
Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson were reportedly under consideration to replace Perez, but Hughes believes two other drivers who formerly raced for the team should have been offered the chance.
“Now Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly have the experience, I would be almost certain they would do a better job in that car now than Perez,” said Hughes.
“If there was an obvious red hot prospect in the RB team, you’d say ‘Right, do it, swap around’ but there is not. There are question marks around Daniel [Ricciardo] as well.”

Red Bull to revert to old specification car to help Sergio Perez
While Red Bull intends to bring more updates to their car in the second half of 2024, part of their plan is to revert to an older specification of the RB20 to help Perez.
Red Bull engineers know they ‘overstepped the mark’ with their aggressive update cycle for the RB20, and using a mix of new and old parts in Monza will give them a read on what works.

This will benefit Perez because the older specification is closer to the car he drove at the start of the season when he achieved second place in three of the first four races.
Perez still potentially faces the axe if he does not improve his results at tracks he is known for achieving good results at, including Singapore and Azerbaijan.
