Oliver Bearman missed out on finishing in the points in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix during his second outing for Haas this season.
The Briton was called up late on Friday morning to replace Kevin Magnussen, who was ill for the day. Initially, it looked like he would only be participating in the Sprint race.
This was upgraded to the entire weekend once it became clear that Magnussen was not fit enough to race, with Bearman getting another outing for his 2025 team after the Dane was banned in Azerbaijan.
Although he started the race in P16 ahead of Max Verstappen, Bearman struggled to make it into the top ten in the tricky conditions. The stewards gave him a time penalty for a collision with Liam Lawson in the race’s opening stages and later suffered from a spin that put him further behind the pack in P12.
Bearman was one of the drivers who pitted as the conditions worsened midway through the race, although he followed Verstappen in wanting the race to be red flagged.
Unheard team radio transcripts posted to social media website X show Bearman could be heard over team radio frantically telling race control to suspend the race as the rain increased before the red flag.
Oliver Bearman’s frantic radio messages as rain hit Sao Paulo Grand Prix
Bearman was speaking to his engineer Mark Slade throughout the race about the conditions, updating him on whether it was enough to switch to the full wet tyre. The Briton went into the race having studied the onboard of Verstappen from his race in 2016, which was also affected by rain.
He could be heard frantically trying to get the FIA to stop the race due to visibility concerns, with him nearly running off track exiting the Senna ‘S’ without knowing where he was going.
| Driver | Engineer |
| Bearman: “How are we allowed to race like this? Someone is going to crash big time.” | |
| Slade: “Perez coming up behind you on his full wets.” | |
| Bearman: “Guys I can’t even see in front.” | |
| Slade: “You’re doing a great job Ollie.” | |
| Bearman: “Yeah but, come on. Talk to the FIA. I’m just trying not to die.” |
Remarkably, only four drivers switched to the full set as the rain worsened while most opted for a new set of Intermediate tyres.

Only the top three of Verstappen, Esteban Ocon, and Pierre Gasly elected to stay out on their worn Intermediates before the red flag enabled them to change to a new set without needing to lose time in the pits.

Haas leapfrogged by Alpine after double podium in Sao Paulo GP
Haas came into the Sao Paulo GP in sixth place on 46 points, just 40 points behind Aston Martin in the battle for fifth place.
With Nico Hulkenberg getting black-flagged for outside assistance, it meant the American team came away from the race in Brazil having not scored a single point.
The double podium for Alpine enabled them to leapfrog several teams, including Haas, in the Constructors’ Championship.
They now sit in sixth place just three points ahead of Haas with three races to go, while they also stand a great chance of overtaking Aston Martin if their current pointless form continues.
