Toto Wolff has issued his verdict on the Formula 1 GOAT debate between Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
Wolff, 54, is one of the most respected figures in the F1 paddock, having led Mercedes since leaving Williams in 2013.
Under the Austrian’s guidance, Mercedes have won countless world championship titles, with Hamilton winning six championships during his time as a driver for the Silver Arrows.
Hamilton, 41, is often regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history, along with the likes of Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso.
Wolff, though, was in ‘no doubt’ when he was asked to name his pick in the age-old GOAT debate.
Are the retirement rumours surrounding Lewis Hamilton justified, or unfair to his legacy?
Toto Wolff was in ‘no doubt’ when asked to name his F1 GOAT
Speaking to Sky Sports reporter Rachel Brookes in her new book, ‘F1 Racing Drive’, Wolff stated that, based on stats, Hamilton is the greatest of all time.
He also stated that Hamilton has the ‘biggest recognition’ outside of F1 and labelled the seven-time world champion as ‘multifaceted’.
Brookes wrote: “For Toto Wolff, he has no doubt who his GOAT is, and says, ‘Every generation has had a great driver.
“‘But when you look at the statistics, and I’m a stats man, Lewis has seven world championships, equal to Michael Schumacher, most pole positions, most race wins, most podiums, he’s smashed those records.
“‘So, he is the greatest of all time on track, and I think he has the biggest recognition outside. He is multifaceted; it’s not just the race driver who is the GOAT.
“‘But if you ask someone what the sport stands for, certainly, Lewis Hamilton will be very much be one of the first names people say.’”

Does Toto Wolff think Lewis Hamilton can win an eighth F1 world title?
After being denied a record-breaking eighth world title in extremely controversial fashion back in 2021, Hamilton has endured several tough seasons.
Speaking last year, during Hamilton’s nightmare debut season with Ferrari, Wolff believes the 41-year-old is still capable of winning another world title.
However, Wolff made key that Hamilton needs a car that he has ‘confidence’ in and one that can respond how he wants it to.
As reported by F1, Wolff said: “I think if he has a car underneath him that he has confidence in, that does what he wants, then yes.
“If he has a car that’s not giving him the feedback that he wants, and that was the Mercedes of the past few years, and that seems to be the Ferrari and even worse, then not.
“But you ask me whether he has it… he definitely has it.”
