Lando Norris heads for the 2025 F1 United States Grand Prix at COTA trailing his title rival and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by 22 points in the drivers’ championship.

The Briton outscored the Australian during each of the past three rounds in Italy, Azerbaijan and Singapore. Yet Norris was only able to reduce his deficit to Piastri in the 2025 F1 drivers’ standings from 34 points to 22, with six Grands Prix and three Sprints remaining this season.

Austin, Texas may now mark not only the next round of the 2025 F1 season, but a key round for Norris, Piastri and Red Bull racer Max Verstappen in their title fight. The United States GP will also stage the fourth F1 Sprint this term, before the final two Sprints in Brazil and Qatar.

Piastri is yet to win a Sprint this season, while Norris benefitted from a safety car to win the Miami Sprint in May. Melbourne native Piastri responded by winning the Miami Grand Prix, though, and he also won the Belgian Grand Prix after the most recent Sprint of 2025 at Spa.

Timo Glock thinks Lando Norris feels he has ‘nothing to lose’ in the F1 drivers’ title fight

Outscoring Piastri in Italy, Azerbaijan and Singapore has given fresh life to Norris’ title hopes after he fell to his worst deficit so far this term at 34 points. But Timo Glock saw a change in Norris’ attitude towards the title fight from his fight with Piastri in the Singapore Grand Prix.

2025 F1 drivers’ championship momentum between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris

Glock now believes Norris feels he has “nothing left to lose” after attempting, and pulling off but with contact, an aggressive overtake to claim third place at Marina Bay. Norris frustrated Piastri by causing a collision in Singapore, as they banged wheels into Turn 3 on the first lap.

“Lando Norris has nothing left to lose,” Glock has told Sky Germany. “You can see that in the way he handled Oscar Piastri in the third corner [in Singapore].”

Oscar Piastri can try to use his anger from Singapore at the United States Grand Prix

McLaren teammates Norris and Piastri both left it as late as they dared to brake for Turn 3 at the start of the Singapore GP, knowing the difficulties for overtaking around Marina Bay. But Norris’ line was slightly compromised owing to Verstappen parking his Red Bull on the apex.

Norris tapped the rear of Verstappen’s Red Bull, which forced him to turn out into Piastri to avoid a bigger collision. The contact frustrated Piastri, as he felt wronged by the Briton who went on to finish in P3 behind Verstappen in P2 despite damaging his front wing endplate.

Now, the United States GP and the F1 Sprint at COTA will both offer Piastri chances to utilise any lingering anger to try to end Norris’ recent resurgence. But the two events in Austin can be big for Norris at a time when Guenther Steiner has told McLaren to back Piastri’s title bid.
