The Formula 1 summer break is a crucial period for Fernando Alonso as he weighs up his options for 2027.

The Spaniard is out of contract with Aston Martin at the end of 2026. At 45 years old, many have wondered if Alonso will retire, especially given how disastrous his season has been.

Aston Martin have been miles behind in development in 2026, with the AMR26 being up to five seconds slower at some races. The Hungarian GP did see a dramatic improvement with the B-spec car, as Alonso reached Q2 for the first time this season.

Ted Kravitz predicts Fernando Alonso to retire from F1 in 2026 as he is ‘not really enjoying it anymore’

These updates could be critical for Aston Martin in their bid to keep the two-time champion. Alpine are interested in signing Alonso in 2027, with Flavio Briatore being keen to bring him back to Enstone.

Alonso does not want to work with Luca de Meo again after his previous stint at Alpine. That could hamper their pursuit of the Spaniard, but there is no guarantee that he will be on the grid at all next season.

Retirement is a real possibility, and Ted Kravitz predicts that Alonso will call time on his career in 2026. He stressed that the 45-year-old wants to race in other categories, and is not currently enjoying being in F1.

He said via Ted’s Notebook on Sky Sports F1 (26/7, 5:35 pm): “Fernando Alonso will be spending the next three weeks, the summer break, deciding whether he wants to continue with this Formula 1 malarkey or not.

“So, I don’t know. I think he’s 50/50, I’m 50/50. I think if I was to guess, I think he’s probably going to retire, not because of the Aston Martin situation, but because he wants to race in other stuff and he’s not really enjoying it anymore.

“Where’s the joy? Which is a question he’s been asking himself. And is there going to be any joy for him next year if he stays at Aston Martin? Even if he went to Alpine, is there going to be much joy for him there?

“He’s Fernando Alonso, he needs to be winning races, he wants to be winning more races before he finishes for good.

“So, I don’t know. If it was a guess from me, I’d say that this will be his last year, but that’s only a guess, because he’s going to make his decision in the summer break.”

Jenson Button thinks Alonso will stay in F1 beyond 2026 as he wants his son to see him racing in the sport. Whatever he chooses to do, that decision will certainly be made over the next few weeks.
