Ted Kravitz names brand new driver as a potential candidate to replace Franco Colapinto after the British Grand Prix

After six races for Alpine, Franco Colapinto appears to be once again fighting for his Formula 1 future.

The British Grand Prix was when Franco Colapinto first burst onto the scene in Formula 1.

Colapinto impressed Williams at Silverstone during his first FP1 session for the team last season.

That led to the Argentine replacing Logan Sargeant for the final nine races of 2024, and Alpine deciding to sign the 22-year-old on a long-term loan this season.

His arrival seemed to signal that Jack Doohan was walking a tightrope to retain his seat, and after six pointless races, the Australian was dropped.

Colapinto has now taken part in six Grand Prix and has matched Doohan’s worrying points tally, with the pair now the only drivers who haven’t got off the mark in 2025.

F1 Oversteer understands Mercedes are pushing for Valtteri Bottas to replace Colapinto, and Ted Kravitz agrees that the Finn is a candidate for the seat.

However, speaking after the race, he named another driver who is waiting to make his Formula 1 debut, who could be in line to jump into the Alpine alongside Pierre Gasly.

Ted Kravitz suggests Felipe Drugovich is an option to replace Franco Colapinto at Alpine

Kravitz was speaking on Ted’s Notebook after the race at Silverstone, and when discussing Alpine’s fortunes, he said: “Pierre Gasly, one of the stars of the notebook today, got sixth.

“They’re still last in the constructors’ and more questions about whether Franco Colapinto is going to be driving this car in Spa in a few weeks’ time.

“It could be Jack Doohan, it could be Valtteri Bottas, it might be Felipe Drugovich, might be anybody.

“It could be Paul Aron, so there are plenty of doubts about Colapinto because he’s going through a very difficult moment because he was a did not start.

“He was already starting from the pit lane, but then he got into some technical difficulty with getting stuck in second gear and then the car stalling and then it wouldn’t go into anti-stall and release the gear.

“There was some technical reason why he was absolutely not able to get home, so a disastrous race after a disastrous qualifying for Franco Colapinto.”

Felipe Drugovich aiming to make his Formula 1 debut amid Cadillac interest

Felipe Drugovich has been Aston Martin’s reserve driver for the past three seasons after winning the Formula 2 championship.

At 25 years old, many would consider him too old to suddenly break into F1, but it’s believed that he’s got the pace to be worthy of a race seat despite his lack of competitive action in the past few seasons.

It appears very unlikely that the Brazilian will ever get his chance at Aston Martin, with Lance Stroll rushing back from wrist surgery after the Spanish Grand Prix to deny him his debut.

Cadillac’s management are big fans of Drugovich, having worked with him on their WEC program in the past.

If he’s suddenly offered the opportunity to race for Alpine this season, then that may be seen as a blow by team principal Graeme Lowdon.

However, it would give the American outfit a clear run at signing Bottas for 2026, which could be seen as a bonus.
