Williams will be delighted that for the third time in the 2024 Formula 1 season, they’ve left a race weekend with points.
Going into nearly any other race weekend, a new driver on the grid would be the biggest focus in the press and Franco Colapinto was a key talking point.
However, the debut of Italian youngster Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes before his 2025 seat was finally confirmed and Charles Leclerc securing a home victory for Ferrari in front of the Tifosi meant Colapinto’s very good debut went under the radar.
Colapinto knows he wants a change made to his car for the next race and that might get him closer to teammate Alex Albon.
Albon had a very strong weekend, reaching Q3 and taking home two more points for Williams which narrows the gap to Alpine in the Constructors’ Championship.
But Ted Kravitz – reporting live from the pit lane for Sky Sports F1 – noticed one message on his team radio that highlighted that Albon really wasn’t happy with the team.

Williams have had a very tough time and while team principal James Vowles won’t want to admit that they’re already preparing for 2025, it would make sense to switch their focus given where they are in the pecking order.

Especially as they brought a major update package to Zandvoort that Logan Sargeant quickly destroyed in practice.
With Carlos Sainz arriving as well, hopes are high for Williams but Colapinto proved that the team may now have two drivers who could regularly challenge for points for the rest of the campaign.
Why Alex Albon was so angry with Williams during the Italian Grand Prix
Relaying what he heard between Albon and the Williams pit wall, Kravitz said: “So, you’ve mentioned Alex Albon fighting with Kevin Magnussen, Albon’s been reminded by his engineers that Magnussen has a ten-second penalty still to be served.
“Albon’s saying, well what do you want me to do, race him or just stay here?

“I can probably get onto Alonso in P8, now Albon’s been quite strong on the radio, accusing the team of being indecisive once again, that’s something we’ve heard before from Albon, isn’t it?
“A case of I used to be decisive but now I’m not so sure at Williams.”
James Vowles describes ‘exceptional’ thing that’s happened since Colapinto joined Williams
Albon’s frustration is understandable as Magnussen’s position in the race meant the question needed to be asked.
Magnussen ended up finishing as the best of the rest on the track before his 10-second penalty which will be encouraging for Haas and Albon sitting off the Dane was the correct choice.
Colapinto crossed the line in 12th which was a commendable result for the young Argentinian.
James Vowles has said that Colapinto’s already had an ‘exceptional’ impact on the Williams team and he’ll be hoping that continues for the final eight races.
Colapinto’s sponsors are bringing a decent backing too and while Vowles has been clear that’s not the reason he was hired ahead of the likes of Mick Schumacher or Liam Lawson, it certainly doesn’t do any harm.
