Adrian Newey’s work in Formula 1 over the past four decades has earned him the respect of some of the greatest drivers in the sport.
At Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, Adrian Newey has helped some of the best drivers in F1 win iconic championships.
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll decided that if his team were going to join the pantheon of Formula 1 champions, he needed to recruit the 65-year-old after he decided he needed a new challenge.
Fernando Alonso already knows exactly what it takes to win an F1 title although the requirements have changed slightly since his last triumph nearly 20 years ago.
There’s a reason the 43-year-old has extended his career for this long and Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin justifies that decision.

Stroll is in the sport to see his son try and add his name to that list of iconic champions although it’s very difficult to see him finishing ahead of Alonso if they’re in equal cars.
One of Formula 1’s greatest drivers, Sir Jackie Stewart, has shared his thoughts on the move on Instagram.

Stewart won three championships during his nine seasons in F1 before becoming a team owner with the team that bore his name.
Stewart sold his team to Jaguar who were eventually taken over by Red Bull in 2005 where Newey has enjoyed so much success.
It’s no wonder that the charismatic Scot is so delighted to see Newey continue his storied career.
Jackie Stewart sends message to Adrian Newey after confirming move to Aston Martin
Posting on social media after the news broke, Stewart said: “We have had many great drivers in Formula 1, but even fewer who can impact a team as much as Adrian Newey.
“He is a man with a unique vision of Formula 1 cars & understands more than most of us can dream of understanding.
“@astonmartinf1 have certainly put their best foot forward with bringing Adrian on & we look forward to seeing what he does to the car in 2025.”

Patience will be required with Newey not officially starting until next March and other big-name backroom staff signings – such as Enrico Cardile from Ferrari – also yet to formally begin their tenures.
It makes David Coulthard’s 2025 prediction for Alonso rather ambitious but when the new regulations arrive the following year, Newey and his team will be expecting to be near the front of the pack.
Aston Martin beat F1 rivals to Newey signing after ‘late big money’ offer
Unsurprisingly, Aston Martin had to fend off interest from plenty of other teams to secure Newey’s signature.
Ferrari baulked at Newey’s salary demand and Newey being handed a share of the Aston Martin highlights his importance to Stroll.
Alpine made a late bid to sign Newey as well but the project wasn’t as appealing to the 65-year-old as the prospect of working at Aston Martin’s new state-of-the-art facility.
Newey has always taken on projects at teams where work needs to be done.
Red Bull had never won a race in any of their previous guises before Newey helped them go on to win more than a dozen championships.
Everyone associated with Aston Martin will be hoping he can replicate that success again when the rules change in 2026.
