Sergio Perez’s frustration over Cadillac’s debut performance in Formula 1 was evident, but that’s actually a good thing for the team.
Perez finished 16th at Albert Park, three laps behind in what was his return to Formula 1 after a year away. His Cadillac teammate, Valtteri Bottas, ended his race with a DNF.
While Perez looked happy with Cadillac in the lead-up to the race, the former Red Bull driver couldn’t help but look disappointed in his performance.
What do you expect from Sergio Perez in the 2026 F1 season?
Perez’s issues concerned some Cadillac engineers during the weekend, mainly concerning his pace and reliability during practice.
Despite this, almost everyone at Cadillac considered the weekend a success, except Sergio Perez. And his desire to see more out of the team is exactly what they need going forward.

Sergio Perez’s mentality is exactly what Cadillac need to get better
Mexican F1 expert Diego Mejia spoke to ESPN about the Australian Grand Prix. When discussing Sergio Perez’s performance, Mejia explained how his countryman proved his value to Cadillac.
While much of the staff at Cadillac is new and hasn’t experienced much, Perez’s experience as an F1 veteran who has represented the best teams in the sport will mean he will hold them to a higher standard.
“Checo’s mentality is important for the team. Because, right now, everyone on the team is very happy that the dream of creating a Formula 1 team from scratch and being there competing is coming true, and it’s a tangible reality. But Checo comes from above…”
“The mentality that Checo brings from his time at a top team that does things perfectly, down to the last millimetre, and that has incredible depth of resources.”
“All that matters most to Cadillac. For the others, and those who are new, they’re already happy. Checo was not happy at all. At the end, he made it clear – on to the next one.”

Sergio Perez tasked with huge responsibility in Cadillac’s debut season
As one of the first two drivers to represent Cadillac in Formula 1, Sergio Perez’s responsibilities will be far different from those of many other drivers on the grid.
Perez isn’t at Cadillac to compete for championships. Nor is he there to help them secure a solid mid-table spot with points in certain races.
Sergio Perez is going to be responsible for setting the tone for Cadillac as an F1 team. While he can target points occasionally, his main goal is to help the team understand what is needed to compete in Formula 1.
No one expects Cadillac to be competing at a high level this season. This year is about them learning the finer points and addressing their growing pains in real time.
While Perez is ambitious about Cadillac’s long-term potential, he must remember that this project is more of a marathon rather than a sprint.
