Journalist Roberto Chinchero has shared what Aston Martin engineers have been telling him about Fernando Alonso behind the scenes.

Chinchero was a guest on the F1 Nation podcast ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The Formula 1 world owes a lot to Fernando Alonso this season.

Red Bull look set to not only continue their dominance of the sport but extend it further.

Ferrari and Mercedes haven’t been able to get anywhere near the speed that they possess right now.

Aston Martin have created the second-best car on the grid, but only one driver is consistently challenging Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

At 41 years old, few people would have expected Alonso to still be racing at this stage of his career.

However, he’s arguably driving better now than he has been for some time.

Chinchero has shared what those at Aston Martin have been saying about Alonso this year.

Natalie Pinkham shared on the podcast that she’s noticed he’s a lot happier speaking to the press these days.

Asked about the Spanish world champion, Chinchero said: “I think he’s very, very hungry, that’s what’s surprised me a lot is how hungry he is.

“He’s nearly 42 and I think he’s more hungry than [Yuki] Tsunoda probably! He’s pushing.

“I sometimes have the opportunity to speak with people at Aston Martin, the engineers, and they say it’s something that you can’t explain.

“He’s like a rookie, like a guy who’s been waiting 10 years for this success in Formula 1.

“Everyone wants to see Fernando at the top of the podium because at the moment he’s the green pixel in the Red Bull podium until now.

“I think he should fix this target this year, I think Monaco is a good chance for him.”

Alonso has been the most consistent driver on the grid this season, finishing 3^rd in four of the first five races.

He didn’t stray far from the podium in Azerbaijan, finishing fourth behind Charles Leclerc.

Chinchero’s information on Alonso should encourage Aston Martin fans about his long-term future with the team.

He’s signed a contract until the end of 2024, but while he’s performing like this and happy with the car, there’s no telling how long he’ll drive for.

The weather at Imola is set to be the most testing of the season.

That’s likely to play right into the hands of one of the most experienced drivers in F1 history.
