Red Bull fans left stunned by one comment Sergio Perez made after the Mexico City Grand Prix

The Mexico City Grand Prix was full of highlights unless you’re Red Bull driver Sergio Perez.

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez hosted hundreds of thousands of fans over the race weekend and almost all of them were supporting Sergio Perez.

The Mexican driver was hoping to avoid a repeat of his first-corner exit during last year’s race and while he avoided contact on lap one, that’s about the only positive he can take from the weekend.

Perez was stuck at the back of the grid after a Q1 exit and on the face of it had a brilliant start, moving into 10th place in the early stages.

However, he benefitted from Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon’s crash, as well as a false start that saw him pick up a five-second penalty.

Perez and Liam Lawson clashed during the race and the two favourites to be Max Verstappen’s teammate next year ended up finishing 16th and 17th, making them the final two classified finishers of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old wasn’t happy during his post-race media duties but remained determined to suggest that his F1 future wasn’t in any doubt.

Perez was speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the Grand Prix and one comment in particular has left Red Bull fans stunned.

They couldn’t believe how confident Perez was that he would be on the grid in Mexico again next year.

He knows that he can’t show any weakness in interviews but his performances simply haven’t been good enough to justify his place at a top team.

Formula 1 fans surprised at how confident Sergio Perez is over his Formula 1 future

Asked if he had any worries that it could be his final Mexican Grand Prix, Perez said: “Zero.

“I’ll be here next year and I’ll try to go for the victory because that is my dream.”

In response to Perez’s comments, one fan said, “”If I repeat it enough times it will come true” type of statement from Perez. He is gone.”

Another commented, “Great optimism but sadly checo & it is an unfortunate end to a great driver but you are done.. contracts are contracts but if you & the Mutually Agree (££££) that it’s best to terminate it then that’s your lot. You’ve cost the team the constructors for the 2nd time!”

One fan had another theory as to why Perez was so confident, saying, “Either 1) He’s on about being around in a different team or 2) He knows something about RB so they wouldn’t dare to break his contract for next year in case he spills the beans.”

Perez was given a simple instruction by another commenter who said, “Give it up man.”

In direct response to his determined statement, another fan added, “No Checo, you won’t. You were given the best opportunity on the grid to shine and did absolutely nothing. Liam’s getting your 2025 seat.”

Finally, some fans are already telling Red Bull who to replace Perez with, “Pathetic season from Perez. Get Colapinto in the Red Bull.”

Helmut Marko refuses to criticise Sergio Perez after difficult Mexican Grand Prix

If Perez is going to survive beyond the end of this season, let alone until next year’s Mexican Grand Prix, he needs to impress Christian Horner and Helmut Marko.

Marko was surprisingly positive about Perez’s performance, blaming the damage done to his car in his battle with Lawson for his poor display.

Martin Brundle has been left certain of Perez’s future after watching him in Mexico and it’s not good news for the 34-year-old.

His confidence in his ability despite not finishing on the podium since the Sprint Race in Miami is a good sign, but he doesn’t appear to have that level of confidence in his car right now which is one of the reasons why he’s in so much trouble.
