Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has shared what Fernando Alonso told him about his prospects of driving for Red Bull for 2025.

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is out of contract at the end of the season, as is Aston Martin’s Alonso.

And Schumacher, speaking to Sky Germany, has relayed what he’s heard from Alonso on his chances of a seat with the world champions.

Currently the oldest driver on the grid at 42, he’s gunning for a shot at a third title before he retires.

He currently finds himself seventh in the drivers’ championship, with 12 points on the board after three races.

Perez, meanwhile, made a solid start by finishing second behind Max Verstappen at the first two Grands Prix.

However, he wasn’t able to take his first victory for nearly a year at the Australian Grand Prix even though Verstappen retired.

The Mexican ended up coming home in fifth behind both Ferrari drivers and both McLarens.

One journalist told Alonso that a move to Christian Horner’s team for 2025 would be ‘massive’.

There’s also a small possibility that Verstappen jumps ship for next year, and another reporter believes that Horner would ‘100%’ target Alonso in that event.

Schumacher, who competed in 180 races and claimed six victories in his career, said Alonso remains ‘very cautious’ about the possibility of signing for Red Bull.

The German was racing for Toyota when Alonso won his two championships in 2005 and 2006.

He says the Spaniard is continuing to ponder his future amid ‘strong’ speculation about what he’ll do next.

“There are strong rumours,” he said. “Fernando reacted very cautiously when we asked him in the paddock. He said he was thinking about it.”

Will Alonso join Mercedes?

It’s unclear as yet whether Red Bull will have a vacancy for 2025, but we already know that there’s an opening at Mercedes.

Alonso’s long-time rival Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari, leaving the spot next to George Russell empty.

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack plans to offer his star driver a new deal in the early part of the season.

However, while Mercedes have struggled at the start of 2024, Alonso would likely have a significantly better chance of ending his 11-year victory drought with the Silver Arrows.

One journalist said earlier this month that the veteran would already be ‘on the phone’ to Toto Wolff over the drive.

Alonso must first decide if he wants to continue racing in F1 full stop, more than 23 years on from his debut.
