Pierre Gasly celebrated Monaco Grand Prix podium in unheard radio before discovering penalty

Pierre Gasly wasn’t aware that he had a penalty when he crossed the line at the end of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Gasly finished third on the road but was ultimately classified seventh after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. He received the same punishment twice in the race.

The Frenchman thought he had scored just his sixth F1 podium and his first since the 2024 Sao Paulo GP, but compatriot Isack Hadjar inherited P3 instead. Alpine have requested the right to review Gasly’s penalty, so all hope may not be lost.

What a wild Monaco Grand Prix! Were there too many penalties, or did you enjoy the chaos?

Pierre Gasly was overjoyed at ‘huge’ P3 in Monaco before it was taken away

Alpine decided not to inform Gasly about his second penalty, as evidenced by his radio on the cool-down lap.

Engineer Josh Peckett told him: “That is the chequered flag, Strat 13 please.”

“P3!” Gasly shouted in celebration. “We are huge! Honestly.

“Wait, wait, wait,” Peckett replied, without offering any clarification before he returned to the pits.

Gasly could be seen celebrating with one arm out of the cockpit as he completed the final tour of the circuit. After the French GP fell off the calendar, this is the closest he comes to a home race.

The FIA’s official document shows Gasly exceeded the pit lane speed limit by 0.4km/h. He was one of several drivers penalised for the offence during a messy race.

Second-place Lewis Hamilton also fell foul of the rule, along with Mercedes’ George Russell, Gasly’s teammate Franco Colapinto and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Four drivers were also clocked going too fast in practice.

The Race believe that the drivers responsible were effectively cutting the end of the pit lane as they passed the Cadillac garage. That meant their average speed from entry to exit was too high.

The FIA reportedly warned the teams that this may be an issue in 2026 after the addition of an 11th team.

What ‘heartbroken’ Pierre Gasly said about Monaco Grand Prix penalty

Speaking in the media pen, Gasly said he had chasing a result like this for virtually his whole career and insisted that the penalty was ‘unfair’.

“I don’t think there is anything that could hurt me more right now,” he said, via Racer. “It’s 10 years I’ve been working my a– off for this type of moment.

“We did everything right today, standing on that podium in front of all the fans that turned up – this is the type of moment that for me can’t be taken away from us by unfair reasons. What’s going on right now is not right and hopefully they can make the right choice.”

“At the moment, I don’t really have an answer. I’m feeling heartbroken and I just dropped. I crossed the line in P3. Starting from P9, we managed to do everything we needed, we managed the right pace.”

Gasly added that he knew ‘for a fact’ that he had activated the pit lane speed limiter correctly.
