Red Bull and McLaren are continuing their title fight heading into the United States Grand Prix, with both teams bringing a raft of upgrades.

The Milton Keynes squad had promised fixes to their current problems with the RB20 and although much of the US GP weekend for them was engulfed in controversy surrounding a ride height mechanism, they still brought numerous upgrades to the car.

Red Bull has been desperately needing to find a solution for its current problems after struggling behind McLaren in the last two races, with Max Verstappen finishing over 20 seconds behind Lando Norris at the Singapore GP.

McLaren must also ensure that it keeps bringing upgrades to its car in the hopes that it can retain its advantage in the Constructors’ Championship battle, while Red Bull is also keen to enable Max Verstappen to stay ahead of Lando Norris.

Peter Windsor has highlighted one area in which Red Bull has managed to do a ‘good job’ compared to McLaren after seeing their upgrades when speaking on his YouTube channel.

Peter Windsor highlights how Red Bull has developed a better floor than McLaren

All the teams submit their car presentation documents ahead of the weekend, with Red Bull’s containing two components relating to their floor while McLaren has seven components but neither contains anything relating to the floor.

Windsor believes this highlights an area that Red Bull has been better at throughout the season than McLaren.

“If you’re going to change anything, the floor is the most radical part to change in this current regulation set and that’s what Red Bull has modified and developed and done a really good job,” said Windsor.

“Whereas McLaren, if you read through the number of upgrades they have in Austin, none of them come under the heading of the floor. They are all minor aero tweaks on all four corners. You wonder whether they have been playing with a car that was too good in the first place.”

Oscar Piastri has a different-spec car to Lando Norris

McLaren has been holding back on issuing too many upgrades that could impact their car, given how far ahead of Red Bull they were in Singapore.

The team brought one of their final upgrade packages to the US GP weekend, which should help them continue their push for the Constructors’ title.

Ted Kravitz has explained how Norris only has the fully upgraded McLaren this weekend, with Piastri missing one component out of the seven updates.

The speed disparity between Norris and Piastri was highlighted by Windsor, with the latter set to start down in fifth after making a mistake on his sole run.
