Peter Windsor gave Oscar Piastri ‘full marks’ for what he told McLaren during the British Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri was effectively forced to give up his British Grand Prix victory after being handed a 10-second time penalty by the stewards.

The Australian was leading the race when he was handed the penalty for a Safety Car infringement, after he slowed down from 218kph (135mph) to 52kph (32mph) at the restart.

His manoeuvre was judged to be potentially dangerous by the stewards, as it nearly caused Max Verstappen to run into the back of the McLaren driver.

Piastri was unhappy with the penalty after the race, deciding not to comment when asked on his thoughts by the media.

Discussing how he reacted to the penalty on his YouTube channel, Peter Windsor felt Piastri handled it well and offered praise after he made one comment directed towards McLaren over team radio.

Peter Windsor praises Oscar Piastri for McLaren team radio in British Grand Prix

After he served his 10-second time penalty in the pits, Piastri could be heard over team radio asking his McLaren engineer if they would be willing to swap the cars back.

Piastri felt that both he and the team disputed the penalty, but engineer Tom Stallard said they would not use team orders due to the risk it could pose to their one-two result.

“You can imagine he was not happy after that race. You wouldn’t be. He was faster all weekend, and in his mind, he’d done nothing at all wrong behind the Safety Car and had to sit there for 10 seconds to let the other guy win,” said Windsor.

“I give him full marks for saying what he did on the radio, let’s have a motor race between us, and that’s a good sign for the rest of the season. Regardless of what happens with this momentum that Lando is building, Oscar is not going to let this one go.”

Oscar Piastri extends title lead as Lando Norris closes

Piastri was the quicker driver between him and Norris all weekend, but it was the Briton who came out on top with maximum points.

Norris is now eight points adrift of Piastri, having cut it down from 11 points exiting Austria, and will want to continue the momentum heading into the European races.

Jolyon Palmer felt Piastri’s penalty was unjustified, given he didn’t cause any incident on track with his harsh braking before the restart.

McLaren have been open about letting their drivers race, and this will likely continue, given their lead in the Constructors of over 200 points and how far ahead their drivers are from Max Verstappen.
