Oscar Piastri’s body language suggests he is now ‘fed up’ at McLaren amid 2025 title fight

Oscar Piastri’s steely demeanour is starting to diminish as he feels the pressure of battling for the 2025 Formula 1 championship.

The Australian lost the lead of the standings after the Mexico City Grand Prix, where McLaren teammate Lando Norris dominated the weekend with pole position and the race win. Piastri was off the pace as he finished over 40 seconds down the road in fifth.

Norris now leads by just one point with four races to go. The Brit is brimming with confidence and on a rich vein of form, but the cracks are beginning to show for his teammate.

Piastri has been frustrated over McLaren’s team orders, notably with how they have appeared to favour his teammate, such as when Norris barged past him in Singapore. But the 24-year-old’s performance levels have dropped in recent races.

He has suddenly struggled to find the right balance with the MCL39 following the team’s upgrades. Juan Pablo Montoya says Norris is more suited to the car than Piastri, and it is costing him in the title fight.

Oscar Piastri looks like he’s ‘fed up’ with the 2025 season after ‘radical’ change in body language

Piastri had been likened to Kimi Raikkonen, with many referring to him as the new ‘Iceman’ due to his calm and often emotionless demeanour. But that has ‘changed radically’ in recent races, with journalist Antonio Lobato suggesting that he is ‘fed up’.

“Well, I really don’t know. Yes, I just analyse what I see, right?” he said via Soymotor about the McLaren drivers.

“And the body language of both of them, Lando and Piastri, has changed radically from that of Norris, who was down in the dumps, was beating himself up halfway through the season, feeling a bit down.

“We’ve moved on to a Norris who is now very fun, even joking, confident in himself, different, and the ice man seems to be slowly thawing and becoming more and more human.

“You see that things are affecting him more and more, he’s no longer with that flat face that always made it difficult to know if he was happy or sad. Now you see him and you realise that he’s suffering, you realise that he’s getting fed up with the season.”

Even Lance Stroll is beating Oscar Piastri in some areas amid 2025 title fight

Damon Hill thinks Piastri’s mindset has changed for the worse after recent races. The pressure of having Norris overtaking him in the standings and Max Verstappen closing in behind is getting to him.

The Mexican GP was particularly concerning as he was miles off the pace of his teammate all weekend. Piastri could only manage P7 in qualifying while Norris stormed to pole position.

Lance Stroll’s gap to Fernando Alonso was closer than Piastri was to Norris in qualifying, highlighting just how much the Australian is struggling. The Canadian has only outqualified his Aston Martin teammate on eight occasions throughout their time in Silverstone.

All eyes will be on Piastri to see if he can recover his championship lead. But it is clear that the momentum has shifted in favour of his McLaren teammate.
