Despite Ayrton Senna being a thorn in the side of every single teammate he was matched up against during his illustrious F1 career, Oscar Piastri would relish the opportunity to find out why the Brazilian legend was so good.

Oscar Piastri’s teammate pairing with Lando Norris has been under the spotlight during the Australian’s F1 career, due to them often being within close proximity of each other on the race track.

F1 fans were treated to an intra-team title fight last year between the McLaren duo, with Norris ending the season on top to claim his first world title in F1.

It marked the first title fight between McLaren teammates since the days of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, which culminated in one of the greatest rivalries in F1 history.

Senna held the bragging rights in race wins and pole positions, but Prost has always been considered an equal to the three-time world champion.

The Frenchman more than held his own against Senna, securing more podium finishes and overall championship points than the Brazilian during their tenure together as teammates.

Oscar Piastri names Ayrton Senna as his dream teammate in Formula 1

In a recent episode of Quad Lock Hot Laps alongside Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell, Piastri was asked a series of questions while trying to set a lap around the iconic Phillip Island circuit in Victoria.

One of the questions that the nine-time Grand Prix winner was asked was in reference to who his dream teammate would be from any era of Formula 1.

Piastri answered, “I think Senna would be really cool, or would have been really cool. I mean, just to see how good he really was.

“Obviously, the respect everyone has for him is incredible. So, I would have liked to be his teammate just to see exactly how good he was and what made him so good firsthand.”

While Senna’s career was tragically cut short at Imola in 1994, the reverence from his former rivals only confirms his status as one of F1’s greatest ever drivers.

One driver who had the difficult task of teaming with the Brazilian was Gerhard Berger, who strongly considers Senna as the best driver that the sport has ever seen.

However, the Austrian also mentioned Piastri’s current rival, Max Verstappen, as a candidate who can potentially usurp Senna at the very top of the mountain.

Oscar Piastri has shared some similarities with Ayrton Senna at McLaren

During the opening stages of McLaren’s dominance over the rest of the grid last year, Piastri became the first McLaren driver since Senna to record four consecutive Grand Prix victories, something that Lewis Hamilton was never able to achieve at the Woking-based outfit.

What’s more, Piastri and Norris’ title fight last drew a lot of comparisons to Senna and Prost’s fiery battles during F1’s golden era of the late 1980s/early 1990s.

The Australian driver can take a lot of pride from being included in the same sentences as one of F1’s greatest ever drivers, but will need to add some championships to his list of accolades if he is to be seriously compared with Senna.
