According to an F1 paddock insider, Mercedes are ‘livid’ with the FIA following confirmation that the speed limit timings at the Monaco Grand Prix were incorrect.
A swathe of drivers were handed penalties for seemingly surpassing the pit lane speed limit during the Monaco Grand Prix, including Mercedes’ George Russell and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
The FIA rescinds Pierre Gasly’s penalties and he gets P3 in the Monaco Grand Prix – Is this the right outcome?
Due to the fact that Gasly’s time penalty was applied post-race rather than served during it, the FIA were able to reinstate his original finishing position of P3. It marks a historic result for the Frenchman, who now has a podium at Monaco to his name.
Alpine were also the only team of the offending drivers to have lodged a right to appeal within the stipulated 36-hour time frame. However, it seems that even if the other teams did put forth an appeal, not much could have changed anyway.
Mercedes are ‘livid’ after FIA confirmed Monaco GP pit lane timings were ‘wrong’
Following the FIA’s ruling ahead of this weekend’s Barcelona Grand Prix, F1 journalist Adam Cooper shed some light on the sentiments within the Mercedes camp towards the decision.
Russell was arguably the hardest hit driver out of them all, with the Briton being forced to serve a drive-through penalty after failing to serve his first five seconds at his earliest opportunity.

The journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “A @MercedesAMGF1 insider says the team is ‘livid’ about the confirmation that the pit lane speed checks were not accurate – but as the stewards noted, there is no mechanism to address the penalties taken during the race.”
The chequered flag saw Russell take it in P12, which proved to be his second consecutive finish outside of the points, while high-flying teammate Kimi Antonelli secured a maximum points haul yet again with his dominant victory in the Grand Prix.
It means that the Briton is now some 68 points behind his younger teammate in the F1 standings, and currently faces a mountain to climb in order to get himself back into contention.
Due to the ruling dropping Isack Hadjar and Oscar Piastri down to P4 and P5, respectively, Cooper sent out a separate post on X that detailed how Red Bull and McLaren have now appealed the FIA’s decision.

Pierre Gasly applauds the FIA for making the ‘right decision’
Speaking to Canal+ inside the paddock, Gasly gave his immediate reaction to having his podium finish at the jewel in F1’s crown reinstated.
“I was in the hospitality area when the FIA announced its decision, so I was extremely happy,” he told the French broadcaster. “It’s certainly a bit unusual to celebrate a podium finish on the Friday of the next Grand Prix, but I think it’s the right decision.
“A mistake was made over the weekend. I have to say a big thank you to the FIA and to F1 in the end, for looking into it, taking all the evidence and the situation into account, and addressing it.
“The fact that there was a mistake, which of course has quite significant consequences, but everyone took responsibility as they should have. But we know it’s never that simple at this level, in any sport. So I think this really shows all the good work that’s been done.”
