Mercedes development driver Esteban Gutierrez has admitted he would absolutely love to drive this season’s Red Bull Formula 1 car.

Gutierrez was speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast and reflected on a fantastic race in his home country at the weekend.

The 32-year-old was watching on from over Toto Wolff’s shoulder as he saw Max Verstappen take the chequered flag for the 16th time this season.

His nearest rival on the day was Lewis Hamilton who extracted every bit of pace out of his Mercedes and benefitted from a brilliant strategy from the team.

Mercedes have varied between having the second-fastest and fifth-fastest car at times during the season.

They look set to finish as runners-up in the Constructors’ Championship although Ferrari can still catch them, but Red Bull have more than doubled their points.

Gutierrez has now admitted that he would love to have the opportunity to drive this year’s Red Bull considering how quick it is.

Every driver wants to be in the best car and his employers may not be too happy that he’d rather be in their biggest rival’s car instead of theirs.

However, you can hardly blame him considering the results Verstappen is producing in it right now.

Mercedes driver Gutierrez keen to drive Red Bull

Gutierrez was asked if he would love to drive the RB19 and said: “Of course, I mean me personally I would love to see myself driving the best car and the quickest car in the world.

“I did try the Mercedes championship-winning cars, I had the opportunity to drive them, but it always comes to your mind when you’re at the race track and you’re here in Mexico as a Mexican, it comes to my mind that it would nice to be driving the fastest car and winning a race.”

The opportunity to drive the Red Bull in the future might arise sooner rather than later considering the speculation surrounding Sergio Perez’s future.

Martin Brundle shared live on air during the Mexico City Grand Prix whether he thinks Gutierrez’s fellow countryman will still be at Red Bull this time next year.

He has three race weekends left to prove himself although his form has deteriorated since the mid-season break.

While Gutierrez isn’t going to be in the conversation to replace him, there will be plenty of current F1 drivers who fancy driving the fastest car on the grid.

Whether they fancy dealing with Max Verstappen as a teammate is another matter.
