Max Verstappen won’t like the ‘noise in the paddock’ that could harm his 2026 chances with Red Bull

Max Verstappen could play a huge role in the Formula 1 driver market in 2026 as he weighs up his options for the future.

Following a tough start to 2025, where the Dutchman had won two races and scored five podiums before the summer break, rumours swirled that he could be on the move for next season.

Verstappen was linked with Mercedes as he expressed his dissatisfaction with Red Bull and the development of the RB21. Toto Wolff is keen to get the four-time champion into his car, having had discussions with him back in 2024.

However, the 28-year-old has committed his future to the Milton Keynes outfit, for now at least. Verstappen plans to assess where the field is in 2026 with the new technical regulations before deciding on his future.

Verstappen has an exit clause in his contract, which could facilitate an exit. Red Bull will need to build a competitive car with their new power unit in 2026, but early signs are not encouraging.

‘Noise in the paddock’ says Red Bull’s 2026 engine ‘isn’t there’, Max Verstappen will hate it

Speaking on Sky Sports F1 (23/11, 6:41 am), Bernie Collins revealed what the paddock is saying about Red Bull’s 2026 engine: “He’s obviously staying for now and he’s taken the decision to wait and see how next year goes with that new powertrain, with the big change in regulations.

“If you listen to all the noise in the paddock, we think that the Red Bull powertrain isn’t there. But noise in the paddock is noise in the paddock, nobody’s compared them like-for-like and we won’t know until we get to the first race, really, next year.

“They need to be working hard on the car, which Max has been vocally unhappy with at times this year, and the engine for next year, in order to retain him. If you take him out of the team, the team is nowhere in the championship.”

This is not what Verstappen will want to hear as he hopes to become a five-time champion. He has put his faith in Red Bull to give him a winning car in 2026, but if the rumours are true, he may be having doubts about his championship chances.

Max Verstappen is already in discussions over an exit from Red Bull

Verstappen will want to be winning in 2026 and taking the fight to the field under the new regulations. But even Red Bull themselves admit that that may not be possible from the off.

Helmut Marko says Red Bull won’t be winning in the first half of 2026. This may give the Dutchman even more reason to consider his future, and reports say that is exactly what he is doing.

Verstappen is in negotiations with Mercedes ahead of the 2026 season. The Silver Arrows are believed to have the fastest engine next season, making them an attractive option for the 28-year-old.

As Collins rightfully notes, Red Bull would be nowhere in the 2025 standings without their star driver. They cannot afford to lose him in 2027, so the pressure on the team will be immense as they try to give him a competitive machine.
