Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen has admitted that he would love Formula 1 to return to Mugello in the future.
During the Covid-impacted 2020 season, the FIA had to get creative with the calendar and Max Verstappen and co. headed to Italy three times to get back to racing.
Speaking on the Talking Bull Podcast, Verstappen and Sergio Perez were asked about which tracks they’d like to race at again in F1.
The Formula 1 calendar is becoming more and more of a contentious subject within the sport.
The teams travelled to 22 different tracks in 2023 and should have reached a 23rd race had the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix not been cancelled due to flooding.
Logistically, this is becoming more and more of a challenge for the teams and people are starting to speak out.
Fernando Alonso has admitted that the schedule is what’s likely going to force him to retire one day.
McLaren team principal Zak Brown has suggested that 24 races is the absolute maximum that should be considered.
However, Verstappen was asked which circuit he’d like to race at in Formula 1 and it didn’t take him long to decide on Mugello.
It’s a surprise that he chose the Tuscan circuit considering the only time he’s raced there in F1 he didn’t have the best time.

Verstappen would love Mugello to be added to Formula 1 calendar
Asked about what track should be added to the schedule, Verstappen simply said: “For me, Mugello. The track layout, there are so many fast corners in an F1 car, it’s so nice.”
During the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton continued his dominance that year, finishing ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas during Ferrari’s 1000th race in the sport.
Mercedes qualified one-two with Verstappen finishing ahead of his teammate at the time Alex Albon.
However, Verstappen failed to finish the first lap in Mugello after colliding with former teammate Pierre Gasly and it’s one of the last times he’s retired from a Formula 1 race.
Albon ended up on the podium that day and it’s still one of just two occasions where he’s recorded a top-three finish.
Verstappen might be desperate to return to Mugello to have a proper go and racing on the circuit.
Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that F1 will add another European circuit to the calendar when the entire world wants to get in on the action.
If Formula 1 decided not to return to Imola for example, then a straight swap to Mugello – the same way that Madrid might be handed a race in place of Barcelona – could be an option.
