Legendary driver Fernando Alonso has admitted that one decision Formula 1 have made ahead of the 2024 season has left him very confused.
The Aston Martin star was speaking to Motorsport.com after another brilliant campaign.
When he joined the midfield team this year, few would have expected him to be regularly challenging for podium finishes.
He recorded eight top-three finishes, the last of which came in Brazil after a sensational battle with Sergio Perez.
Fernando Alonso is now 42 years old and the oldest driver on the grid, but that doesn’t appear to be affecting his performance.
In fact, he only appears to be getting quicker and you have to wonder just how long he could race at the highest level.
While he’s still got a quick car underneath him, he’s going to be very reluctant to give up away time soon as he chases his first win in over a decade.
However, Alonso has been left frustrated by one decision made by Formula 1 organisers ahead of the 2024 season.
It’s set to be the most demanding campaign in the sport’s history with two dozen Grand Prix on the calendar.
Not only that, in order to squeeze each of those races – alongside six Sprint Races – into the schedule, they’ve had to make some interesting calls when it comes to when each race will take place.

Alonso questions 2024 F1 scheduling decision
Speaking about next year’s calendar, Alonso said: “It’s been a very demanding season with only 22 races, with two cancellations.
“Next year with the proper [24-round] calendar, we have to see how it feels.
“I saw that it’s a triple-header. I don’t know why, I thought that Vegas was alone next year… It’s three races together. These kinds of things will drain my battery, not driving.”
The decision to make the Las Vegas Grand Prix a triple-header alongside races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi is unlikely to be popular with Alonso and his colleagues.
This year, plenty of drivers turned up at the final race of the season suffering from illness which would have been exasperated by the huge swing in time zones between racing on the West Coast of the USA and the Middle East in the space of a week.
The schedule in Las Vegas was particularly demanding given how late each session started at local time.
That’s only going to be harder to cope with next year with a race in Qatar thrown in as well.
Alonso doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon, but the racing schedule might be what ends up ending his prestigious Formula 1 career.
